Weather curtails Lord's thriller

Leicestershire’s James Taylor posted his third century in four matches against Middlesex to leave this County Championship clash at Lord’s intriguingly poised

ScorecardNathan Buck claimed the wicket of Gareth Berg•PA PhotosRain and bad light in the last hour put paid to an enthralling finish at Lord’s where County Championship Division Two rivals Middlesex and Leicestershire were eventually forced to shake hands on an intriguing draw.As the game entered its final hour, three short showers led to a hat-trick of brief interruptions and the loss of 10 overs. When rain arrived again just before 5.30pm, umpires Peter Willey and Nigel Cowley led the players off for a final time with Leicestershire on 139 for 5 – only 54 short of victory.Having mopped up the last six Middlesex wickets inside 45 minutes at the start of the day, Leicestershire set about chasing 193 for their sixth win of the summer. The visitors made the worse of starts when Greg Smith, fresh from a stylish 65 in the first innings, fell for a golden duck second time around after being castled by Tim Murtagh.Soon after lunch Jacques du Toit, driving hard at a delivery from Murtagh, found a thick edge to be spectacularly held overhead and to his right at slip by Dawid Malan to make it 29 for 2.Middlesex nemesis James Taylor, averaging 161 against the north London side, this time went after only six deliveries and without scoring. Moving back and across his stumps, when he might have played forward to a full-length ball from Pedro Collins, Taylor went lbw to give Middlesex their first whiff of victory.Paul Nixon (24) then dug in with fellow left-hander Matthew Boyce to add 55 in 21.3 overs and take the visitors to within 109 of victory. However, on the cusp of the tea break, Nixon pushed forward at the occasional off-spin of Owais Shah to be caught at short leg.Boyce notched a 102-ball half-century at the start of the final session but only two balls later he went back to a quicker ball from Shaun Udal that crept through the defences and pegged back off stump to leave Leicestershire seemingly in trouble at 92 for 5. Tom New cut the deficit further with a bright and breezy 41 not out with six boundaries before rain arrived and frustration ensued. The final day started with Middlesex resuming on their overnight position of 168 for 4 after 62 overs. They soon lost nightwatchman Toby Roland-Jones for 13, sweeping hard at a full-length ball from Claude Henderson. Roland-Jones saw the ball defect off the right arm of Taylor at short leg and fly to Boyce at backward square leg.Former England batsman Shah combined forces with Gareth Berg (21) to see Middlesex past 200 seemingly in comfort, with Shah posting his third half-century of the summer along the way from 111 balls and with two boundaries. But the loss of Shah, caught at slip off the bowling of Jigar Naik, sparked a dramatic home collapse which saw Middlesex lose their last five wickets for 29 runs in the space of 8.5 overs.Left-arm spinner Henderson bagged 3 for 49, off-spinner Naik 2 for 78 and rookie right-arm seamer, Nathan Buck, who extracted good pace and bounce from a fourth-day pitch, claimed 3 for 37 as Middlesex collapsed from 119 without loss to 255 all out.

Nilesh Kulkarni quits first-class cricket

Nilesh Kulkarni, the left-arm spinner who played three Tests and ten ODIs for India, has announced his retirement from first-class cricket

Cricinfo staff28-Jul-2010Nilesh Kulkarni, the left-arm spinner who played three Tests and ten ODIs for India, has announced his retirement from first-class cricket. “I have a small announcement to make that I am retiring from international and first-class cricket,” Kulkarni said at the launch of Indian Institute of Sports Management, in Mumbai.Kulkarni, 37, has been a stalwart for Mumbai since 1994-95. He took 308 first-class wickets for his team and 95 wickets in List A games. Kulkarni made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 1997-98 and he hit the record books immediately by claiming a wicket off his first ball in Tests, that of Marvan Atapattu. He is the only Indian bowler to achieve this feat and the 12th bowler in the history of the game. He sent down 70 overs but amazingly enough that was the only Test wicket he took for he had the misfortune to bowl when the Sri Lankan batsmen set several records in running up the highest total in Tests. He played in one more Test at home against Sri Lanka but had to wait till 2001 for a Test return. He took one more wicket in the Chennai Test against Australia, which turned out to be his last. He claimed 11 wickets in ten ODIs with a best of 3 for 27.He ends his first-class career with 357 wickets and List A with 135 strikes.

Liverpool weighing Kroos bid

As per El Nacional, a major Liverpool transfer update has surfaced as Fenway Sports Group weigh a bid for Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos – with his stance also detailed.

The Lowdown: Liverpool eye midfield additions…

As previously reported, the Reds and manager Jurgen Klopp have seemingly set the club’s sights on bolstering midfield options in 2022.

Indeed, the likes of Denis Zakaria, who could leave for Borussia Monchengladbach for free at the end of 2021/2022, is on Liverpool’s radar while Borussia Dortmund ace Jude Bellingham is also appreciated at Anfield.

However, it appears the Bundesliga isn’t Klopp’s only port of call as El Nacional share news on midfielder Kroos and his links to the club.

The Latest: FSG weigh £25m bid…

As per El Nacional, despite Kroos being happy at the Bernabeu, Real president Florentino Perez apparently has ‘no plans to meet’ with the player over a contract extension as his current deal looks set to expire in 2023.

This coming summer, as a result, will be the Galacticos’ ‘last chance’ to sell for a profit as things stand as the German star also knows he’ll have ‘interesting offers’.

As such, Kroos himself ‘only anticipates’ one destination in the Premier League and ‘specifically’ Liverpool – where he would ‘also be delighted’ to work under Klopp.

Liverpool’s interest, meanwhile, is thought to be ‘very serious’ – so much so they ‘would be willing’ to pay around €30 million (£25m) to secure his services.

The Verdict: Big claim…

The 32-year-old being open to a Merseyside move to work under Klopp, whilst the club also ponder a £25m offer, certainly comes as a big claim.

Given his age, you would think Kroos’ potential signing may come as quick fix when compared to the likes of Bellingham and Zakaria who, comparatively, come with much longer shelf lives.

However, given his statistics, there is little arguing the World Cup winner would add serious quality to Klopp’s midfield.

According to WhoScored, the £210,000-per-week star has averaged far more key passes (2.4) and shots at goal per 90 (2.4) domestically than any of Liverpool’s current central midfield players.

As well as this, Kroos has completed 94.9% of his passes to teammates in that time – far eclipsing that of any Reds man with more than one league start (WhoScored).

If Liverpool can secure a move later this year, it would certainly back Klopp with some serious quality and depth in the middle of the park.

Leeds: Phil Hay drops Calvin Ramsay interest

Leeds United correspondent Phil Hay has shared the club’s interest in Aberdeen defender Calvin Ramsay.

The Lowdown: Ramsay profiled

Ramsay is just 18 years of age who is primarily a right-back who can also play as a right midfielder.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-42/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Already a Scotland U21 international, Ramsay has made 38 senior appearances for Aberdeen, contributing to 10 goals in the process.

Labelled as ‘quality’ by Paul Robinson, Ramsay was linked with a move to Elland Road earlier this year, and it looks as if he is still on the radar after Jesse Marsch replaced Marcelo Bielsa.

The Latest: Hay’s claim

Hay shared a story on The Athletic on Saturday morning following a record attendance at Elland Road for Leeds’ U23s clash with Man City.

He revealed that the Whites are tracking Ramsay, who would ‘not take long to move into first-team contention’, with the reporter even calling Aberdeen’s gem a ‘rising star north of the border’.

The Verdict: First signing?

It looks as if Leeds will have to act fast when it comes to Ramsay as Liverpool are thought to be planning a bid for the teenager.

Therefore, it looks as if Ramsay could well be Marsch’s first signing as manager, despite RB Salzburg’s Brenden Aaronson remaining a top target heading into the summer.

Ramsay’s potential arrival may pose question marks on Cody Drameh’s Elland Road future, with Bournemouth reportedly making an enquiry for the youngster ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Eastern Province women break record with 464-run victory

Eastern Province women thrashed Kei women by 464 runs in a group-stage match in the Women’s Provincial League in South Africa

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Jan-2011The phrase ‘men against boys’ is in desperate need of change to a more gender-unbiased alternative (women against girls doesn’t quite sound right). Four hundred and sixty four – not the number of people in the stadium, not even the aggregate number of runs in the match – but the margin of victory for Eastern Province women against Kei women in a domestic match in South Africa.Eastern Province amassed 494 in their fifty overs in the Women’s Provincial League group game – a record for the tournament – with Claire Terblanche smacking 181 and Marizanne Kapp getting 163. It was always going to be a testing total for Kei, but their resistance was not just meek, it was non-existent. They rolled over for 30, with Kapp taking 6 for 6 in seven overs.Unfortunately for Kei, this wasn’t just a freak off day. In their first game of the season, in October 2010, they were hammered by 306 runs by South Western Districts. On that occasion South Western Districts had been slightly less merciless with the bat, scoring 329, but only allowed Kei 11.3 overs at the crease before bowling them out for 23.In fact, the League has seen several ridiculously one-sided results. In November last year, Gauteng trounced Limpopo by 302 runs, scoring 365 in an innings that saw Limpopo use nine bowlers, none of whom went for less than seven runs an over. Limpopo’s innings of 63 in that match was inflated by 28 extras. Gauteng hadn’t been that generous in the team’ first meeting in October, when they gave away just six extras, bowled Limpopo out for 30 and chased the score in 7.4 overs.Women’s international cricket has seen some maulings too. In 1997, New Zealand beat Pakistan by 408 runs, and there have been three more matches which have seen victory margins of more than 300 runs.Four hundred and sixty four, though, will be difficult to match. But it’s not completely inconceivable. Kei still have seven more matches to play this season, including another encounter against Eastern Province, and two against the leaders of their West/East group – Boland Women.

Allround Kent too strong for Gloucestershire

Kent cruised to a 36-run Friends Provident t20 victory over Gloucestershire at Gloucester after posting an imposing 217 all out – their highest Twenty20 score

13-Jun-2010
ScorecardKent cruised to a 36-run Friends Provident t20 victory over Gloucestershire at Gloucester after posting an imposing 217 all out – their highest Twenty20 score. The Spitfires made the most of the short boundaries at Archdeacon Meadow to hammer the highest score in the South Division this season, with Rob Key (44), Joe Denly (48) and Alex Blake (33) the main contributors. Will Porterfield’s bright 43 gave Gloucestershire hope, but they collapsed from 62 for 1 to 94 for 6 as Simon Cook took three wickets for 22 runs. The hosts were eventually bowled out for 181, despite Chris Taylor’s defiant 67 off 36 balls.Kent were given the perfect start by Key and Denly, who plundered 65 off the six-over powerplay against bowling that erred on the short side. There were 87 runs on the board in the ninth over when Key was bowled off stump attempting to pull a James Franklin delivery. The Spitfires skipper had hit eight fours in facing 25 balls, but Denly lost nothing by comparison and had smacked seven fours and a six when he was stumped advancing to drive the part-time off-spin of Kadeer Ali. By then it was 101 for 2 and Kent were going along at more than 10 an over. Martin van Jaarsveld added a breezy 26, but the most impressive hitting of their innings came from 21-year-old Blake, who twice profited from missed stumpings by Steve Snell. The left-hander blasted four sixes in his 17-ball innings, one of them cut over point off Jon Lewis, before being yorked by Franklin. At 168 for 5 in the 15th over, Kent looked capable of an even bigger score. But a brilliant boundary catch by Hamish Marshall and a couple of run-outs prevented them becoming the highest scorers in the competition this season.Gloucestershire overcame the early loss of Franklin to score 58 from their powerplay overs. But Cook then instigated a collapse and, although Taylor reached a half-century with two sixes in an over from Matt Coles, Kent always had things under control.Ian Butler also used the long handle to good effect in his 28, but the Gladiators needed 86 off the last five overs and, for all Taylor’s heroics in hitting four sixes and six fours, it proved too much.

West Brom interested in Vedat Muriqi

West Bromwich Albion are interested in a deal to bring Vedat Muriqi to The Hawthorns in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian publication Corriere della Sera (via Sport Witness), who claim that Valerien Ismael’s side are not relenting in their interest to secure a deal for the Lazio centre-forward in the current transfer market, despite the fact the club secured the £7m signing of Daryl Dike earlier this month.

The report goes on to state that CSKA Moscow are also keeping a close eye on the situation of the 27-year-old, while the Serie A side are thought to be willing to sanction the departure of the Kosovo international on a temporary basis – as long as the deal includes an obligation to buy clause.

“Absolute donkey”

While it is true that Muriqi did return impressive numbers during his time in Turkey – scoring 17 goals over 36 appearances for Fenerbahce, bagging 25 goals over 52 outings for Caykur Rizespor and netting 23 times in 69 fixtures for Giresunspor – following his £17.93m move to Lazio back in the summer of 2020, the centre-forward has been a particularly big flop for the Italian side.

Indeed, over his 27 Serie A appearances for I Biancocelesti last season, the £5.4m-rated man scored just one goal, registered no assists and missed four big chances for his side, as well as hitting the target with an average of a mere 0.3 shots per game.

These returns saw the £52k-per-week striker earn an extremely disappointing seasonal SofaScore rating of just 6.69, ranking him as Lazio’s 12th-worst performer in the top flight of Italian football.

Things have not improved over the Kosovan’s 11 league outings in the current campaign, with Muriqi failing to hit the back or providing a single assist for his teammates, as well as missing two big chances.

These metrics have seen the 27-year-old average an even more disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.52, ranking him as Maurizio Sarri’s fourth-worst player in the division this time around.

As such, it is perhaps easy to understand why Vincenzo Morabito suggested that Lazio had been duped into spending so much on the centre-forward, with the Italian football agent stating of Muriqi: “He has this brother who is the Albanian Consul in Istanbul and suddenly [Lazio] pay €18m for a player who is an absolute donkey.

“Simone [Inzaghi] told me, ‘I’m pulling my hair out, here.’ Stefan Radu tells me he can mark Muriqi with slippers on in training because he’s so bad. €18m for Muriqi, and then there are five agents involved with all the commissions. I mean, €18m is a lot of money for Lazio and they get this horrible flop.”

Indeed, there would appear to be worrying similarities between the potential signing of the Kosovan this month and the £15m deal to bring Oli Burke to The Hawthorns back in 2017 – with the Scotland international going on to score just one goal over his 24 appearances for the Baggies before being sold for a near-£10m loss to Sheffield United in 2020.

As such, considering Albion have already brought Dike to the club this winter, in addition to the fact that, should the Baggies go on to secure promotion to the top flight this season, Muriqi would not appear to be a striker who is anywhere near the standard required for the English top-flight, Ismael must avoid a move for the Kosovan this month – as his signing could well prove to be a repeat of the Burke disaster.

In other news: Worrying January transfer claim emerges that will have West Brom fans sweating

West Ham: Moyes drops Antonio update

David Moyes has dropped a worrying update on the condition of West Ham United centre-forward Michail Antonio.

What’s been said?

In recent comments cited by The Guardian, the West Ham manager revealed that he is concerned that the 31-year-old’s involvement with the Jamaica national side – for whom the striker played three fixtures in seven days over the Premier League’s winter break – could prove detrimental to his own team, as the forward is currently the Hammers’ only recognised centre-forward.

Speaking about Antonio’s international commitments, the 58-year-old said: “He has been away a couple of times now and I’ve had concerns about it, yes, because it is new to him. It is not something he has been doing since he was 21 or 22 or something like that. Obviously, they are long travels if you’re going to Jamaica… they’re long journeys to play the games.”

Fans will be seething

Considering the fact that Moyes had all 31 days of January to bring a new centre-forward to the London Stadium, the fact that the Irons boss is already complaining about Antonio’s involvement with Jamaica is sure to have left Hammers fans seething at the 58-year-old.

Indeed, the fact that the 31-year-old forward has to travel considerable distances to play for his international side is unfortunate, however, should Moyes have successfully managed to get a deal over the line for a new striker at any point in the January transfer window, rather than seeing a flurry of late bids either fall through or simply be rejected out of hand, it would have considerably eased the burden placed on Antonio’s shoulders in the second half of the season.

The £10.8m-rated striker’s situation with Jamaica is something that the Scotsman was fully aware of during the winter market, and is something that the former Manchester United manager could have quite easily addressed and solved by being much more organised and efficient with his January dealings.

As such, should Moyes be looking for someone to blame for Antonio’s fatigue, he should not be criticising the scheduling of the World Cup qualifiers, but rather be taking a long hard look in the mirror.

Leeds: Danny Murphy criticises Rodrigo

Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy has criticised Leeds United forward Rodrigo over one moment in the 4-0 defeat against Manchester City.

The lowdown: Humbling loss for Leeds

The Whites ended up on the wrong side of a mauling at Elland Road despite being competitive in the contest for the most part.

Goals from Rodri, Nathan Ake, Gabriel Jesus and Fernandinho condemned Jess Marsch’s side to a defeat which leaves Leeds 17th in the Premier League, five points clear of Everton, who have two games in hand.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates-2/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Despite the heavy scoreline, the hosts were able to carve out opportunities to attack, although one pundit was less than impressed with the quality in the final third.

The latest: Murphy slams Rodrigo

Speaking live on Match of the Day (Saturday, April 30), former Liverpool ace Murphy slammed Rodrigo for his inability to find Raphinha and take advantage of a promising moment.

The 45-year-old fumed: “These are the moments you don’t get very often against the top sides. In the first half, they have quite a few of them. No awareness, don’t even think he knew he was there. Ends up being a poor shot.”

Overall the Spaniard lost possession 14 times (third-most of any Leeds player), misplaced nine of his 32 passes (28%) and was replaced on 83 minutes following a 6.60 rated display from Sofascore.

The verdict: Poor showing

Despite the calibre of opposition, this was a below-par performance from Rodrigo and his team-mates which leaves Marsch’s side fully embroiled in a relegation battle in the run-in.

The 31-year-old remains on six goals and one assist from 30 appearances this season in the frequent absences of Patrick Bamford, a far from fearsome tally from the versatile Spaniard. Indeed, criticisms like the one from Murphy might explain why goals have been so hard to come by for him, if he keeps making the wrong decisions in attack.

With fixtures against Arsenal and Chelsea up next, Leeds and indeed Rodrigo will have to learn from their squandered chances fast and capitalise on each and every one in order to ease their relegation fears.
