Manoj Tiwary’s century wasn’t enough to prevent East Zone’s elimination•ESPNcricinfo LtdManoj Tiwary made a battling century but could not prevent East Zone from being eliminated from the Duleep Trophy after conceding the first-innings lead to Central Zone, who progressed to the semi-finals where they will face South Zone in Indore from Tuesday. As on the first three days, bad light and fog ruled out play for several hours on Friday as well. It was only half an hour after lunch that play began on the final day, and East lost opener Arindham Das in the fifth over of the morning soon after he crossed his half-century. That brought in Manoj, who made his 11th first-class hundred to guide East’s effort.East had virtually no chance of overhauling Central’s mammoth first-innings score of 480, and their best chance lay in not getting bowled out and advancing on the basis of a better run-rate than their opposition in the match. However, those hopes melted away with a couple of triple-strikes from Central. Manoj watched as the middle-order trio of Ishank Jaggi, captain Saurabh Tiwary and Wriddhiman Saha fell in the space of eight deliveries – East slipping from 131 for 2 to 133 for 5. There was some resistance from Manoj and Dhiraj Goswami but East again lost three wickets in ten balls to hurtle towards the exit. Manoj remained unbeaten on 102 when last man Abu Nechim holed out to Suresh Raina off RP Singh to confirm Central’s place in the last four.

Tottenham fans fume at Levy after latest disappointment

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur again fell at the penultimate hurdle on Thursday, as they were beaten on penalties by Chelsea in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, as per the BBC.

It marks their third semi-final defeat in cup competitions in a row.

Spurs headed into the game with a 1-0 aggregate lead thanks to Harry Kane’s penalty at Wembley in the first leg.

But the striker was absent for the deciding tie through injury, along with the likes of Dele Alli and Victor Wanyama. Son Heung-Min, so electric on the wing this season, was also away at the Asian Cup with South Korea.

With a squad stretched to its very limit, Spurs almost capitulated, with Chelsea taking a 2-0 lead at Stamford Bridge through N’Golo Kante and Eden Hazard.

CheekySport’s Joel claims Spurs badly need to invest in January after not having “the balls” to beat Arsenal. Check out his uncensored opinion in the video below…

Fernando Llorente, Kane’s replacement, pulled a goal back for Spurs and levelled the tie on aggregate but Mauricio Pochettino’s men were unable to find a killer second goal.

Eric Dier, the shootout hero at the World Cup when England beat Colombia, scooped his effort over the bar, while Lucas Moura’s kick was saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga. David Luiz then notched the winner to send the Stamford Bridge crowd into raptures.

Spurs fans were subsequently left to fume on social media as, yet again, a thin squad proved their undoing, with many calling on Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to step down after failing to buy a player in the last two transfer windows.

In successive balls from TomLungley, he could have been caught in front of the pavilion and then smashed acatch to Peterson at mid-on.Derbyshire took two other wickets in the morning. James Cameron, making hisfirst-class debut, went for 25 when chasing a ball from Steffan Jones and BenSmith was leg-before to Peterson. The hard-worked left-arm spinner claimed two more wickets after lunch, finishing with 4 for 170 from 47 overs, but only after a partnership of 67 byScott (40 not out) and Gareth Andrew (33).

Benitez nightmare with Lucas Digne

The ongoing feud between Everton left back Lucas Digne, and manager Rafa Benitez has been a hot topic of conversation, that has now lead to the player being linked away from the club and even included in a rumoured offer made to Newcastle United, but it looks like Digne is not about to do his current manager any favours.

What’s the word?

Fabrizio Romano has taken to his Twitter account to let his million followers know about the potential move of Lucas Digne to Newcastle, which is said to be in conjunction with a deal to bring Sean Longstaff to Merseyside, and it’s not good news.

Romano tweeted:

“Lucas Digne will decide his next club soon. He’ll leave Everton with Premier League move likely – but he’s not going to Newcastle despite rumours. Not even an option. No way.”

The transfer insider went on to add further claims of a move to Chelsea:

“Chelsea are interested since weeks but no official talks opened with Everton yet.”

The potential move stems from an alleged argument that took place in training, where the defender disagreed with the Spanish manager’s tactics, and has not been seen in the starting side since the Merseyside Derby at the beginning of December last year, but did return to the bench in the defeat to Brighton at Goodison Park last weekend.

A nightmare for Benitez

There are a number of reasons why the French defender’s apparent rejection of a move to Newcastle United could become a nightmare for Benitez and his plans moving forward.

Sky Sports journalist, Keith Downie, reported that the club could receive Sean Longstaff in a deal that included Digne, but with the Everton player apparently refusing the move, it could put off Eddie Howe and the board in the North East who are looking to bolster their defence over the January transfer window, as they won’t be getting what they need from the move.

It would also stop the Merseyside outfit from signing a player that their manager clearly loves.

Another reason why the 28-year-old’s rumoured snub of the move could cause problems for Benitez is that he wants to sell the player, not loan him out, which is the alleged premise and conditions of the Chelsea deal that Romano has suggested Digne prefers.

According to ESPN in a report this week, Everton are not interested in loan deals for the £110k-per-week star, and have valuated the player at around £25m, with the intention to boost transfer funds by selling the out of favour full-back.

It looks like Digne has no interest in doing his manager any favours when it comes to cooperating with the transfer plans the Everton board have outlined for the Frenchman’s future, and it will be interesting to see if he will get his own way on a Chelsea loan move.

Until he leaves permanently, however, this whole ordeal will continue to terrorise the mind of Benitez for this situation is nothing short of a disaster for the Toffees.

ESPNcricinfo previews the only T20 international between Sri Lanka and India in Pallekele

This will be India’s last T20 before the final squad for the World T20 is announced (the deadline is August 18); some of Sri Lanka’s players will have the benefit of playing the SLPL before their squad is named.India have played just one Twenty20 international in Sri Lanka, in 2009, which they won. The teams have played T20s against each other on four occasions; their last game was more than two years ago. After three losses in a row this trip, Sri Lanka have one final shot at consolation. After a rainless ODI series, there was a steady shower on the eve of this game. The structure of the series has, however, raised question marks. According to the Future Tours Programme, this tour was meant to include three Tests and no ODIs. The teams then decided to play five ODIs and just one T20; the SLC said the teams wanted to focus on limited-overs cricket. Which begs the question: Why not play more T20 internationals instead of five ODIs, a month ahead of the World T20?Form guideIndia: LWLLL (completed games, most recent first)

He ran well between wickets, was especially strong through the leg side and scored at a healthy pace. He was below par in the IPL, averaging 26 and finishing as the fourth-highest run-getter for the Kolkata Knight Riders, but he hit the winning runs that sealed the title in a tight chase.Dinesh Chandimal: He had a disappointing ODI series with the bat, managing just 55 runs in five games when much was expected from him in the middle order. Among Test teams other than Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, India have played the least T20 internationals – 34. Pakistan have played 55, leading the list. Sri Lanka have played 40. Quotes”Basically whenever I think about all these things like, not playing, not getting an opportunity despite scoring a hundred I just analyze myself [and] as the days pass by you tend to improve mentally.”
“It is significant to identify some of the roles for some of the players. We did that against Pakistan as well. We had to try out different combinations in the two T20s. We will try and do the same here.”

After a disastrous Australian tour, Pakistan’s confidence will not have been helped as they were overcome by an inexperienced Pakistan A in their warm-up game ahead of the Twenty20 series against England. Abdul Razzaq’s rollicking unbeaten 39 boosted Pakistan to 143 for 8 after they were put in to bat, but well-paced innings from Mohammad Hafeez and Asad Shafiq set up a seven-wicket victory, achieved with three balls to spare.Hafeez, who is captaining Pakistan A, was named Man of the Match for his efforts in this game, which included two wickets for only 21 runs in four overs of tight offspin and a vital 41 in Pakistan A’s chase. Hafeez, who has not played international cricket for more than two years, brought himself on early in Pakistan’s innings and was soon rewarded with Imran Farhat’s wicket.Imran Nazir fell soon after for a pedestrian three runs from 10 balls, and though Khalid Latif and Umar Akmal consolidated with a 33-run partnership, Pakistan struggled to score quickly in the first half of the innings. Latif and Akmal fell in quick succession, and Fawad Alam and Shahid Afridi struggled to get going in their short innings.Shoaib Malik provided some impetus with a rapid 32 before he was run out by substitute fielder Abid Ali as Pakistan slipped to 109 for 7 in the 18th over. Razzaq then showed his extensive experience at the end of the innings with a typically aggressive knock, smashing two fours and three sixes to add 34 for the eighth wicket with Yasir Arafat, who was out off the last ball after contributing just three runs to the partnership.Pakistan A lost Shahzaib Hasan early in their chase, but Hafeez and Shafiq steadied the innings with a 67-run partnership – the highest of the match. Hafeez struck five fours and a six before he was bowled by Arafat, who was impressively economical in his four overs, conceding only 17 runs to go with his wicket.Shafiq was in sight of a maiden twenty20 half-century, having muscled his way to 48 with six fours and a six, but edged Wahab Riaz to Sarfraz Ahmed with 23 still needed in under three overs. Umair Khan and Naeem Anjum, who both made their twenty20 debuts against England Lions last week, were up to the task, however, hitting three fours and a six between them to seal the win in the final over.

The forward was keeping a close eye on the Euro 2024 draw, which unfolded in Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie on Saturday, and saw France being drawn into Group D alongside Austria, the Netherlands, and the playoff winner A (among Poland, Wales, Finland and Estonia). It is one of the tournaments that Giroud is yet to win in his illustrious career and the 37-year-old vowed to keep no stone unturned to finish on the podium on July 14 in Berlin. It could potentially be a milestone match for the former Arsenal hitman as the forward revealed that he is contemplating hanging up his boots after the continental event.

Speaking to , Giroud said: "I am missing this Euro. If we win it, I will bow out. That might also be the case if we don't make it to the end. I'm enjoying every moment. I said to some guys that if we won the 2022 World Cup, I was withdrawing. But I am hungry for titles with my country. I have a lot of hopes and ambitions. If it goes well, it is possible that it could be a possibility."

GettyWHAT GIROUD SAID ABOUT THE DRAW

Giroud was content with the draw results as he feels they have been placed in a relatively easier group than in 2021, where they had to take on Germany, Portugal, and Hungary in the round-robin stage.

"We know the Netherlands very well, it has always been contested against them. We will wait for the barrage because on paper, Wales and Poland are perhaps more armed. It is perhaps a draw more lenient than the last Euro," he said. "Austria has good young people. There are guys who play in big clubs. We have to move into this group but it won't be easy and it will make for good matches."

There will be a number of changes to the Ireland team that defeated Latvia last Wednesday, with Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu expected to replace Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher between the posts.

Atletico Madrid right-back Matt Doherty wore the captain's armband in the last game, but his place is under threat from chief captain Seamus Coleman, with the Everton defender enjoying more regular game time in the Premier League.

Midfielders Josh Cullen and Jason Knight are likely to come into the reckoning, having been rested, but Will Smallbone's performance against Latvia has given the head coach a dilemma. Sheffield United centre-back John Egan is expected to return to the heart of the defence, while Evan Ferguson, who was recently included in the 2023 NXGN list, will continue to lead the attack.

Ireland are missing a number of experienced campaigners for the game, including Fulham centre-back Shane Duffy, 60-cap winger Robbie Brady and forward Callum Robinson, who has eight goals to his name for the Boys in Green.

The Euro 2024 qualifying campaign marks something of a turning point for Les Bleus, with experienced heads such as Raphael Varane and Hugo Lloris passing the torch to a new generation, while Mbappehas been handed the captain's armband.

Didier Deschamps' decision to give the honour to the Paris Saint-Germain striker ahead of Antoine Griezmann prompted a flurry of controversy and headlines, but the noise has evidently not distracted the players, who put on a polished display against the Dutch last time out.

As such, Deschamps is unlikely to make many changes for the game against Ireland. Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate will continue as the centre-back pairing in front of new number one, Mike Maignan. Mbappe, Griezmann and Kingsley Coman will provide the pace and guile to support either Randal Kolo Muani or Olivier Giroud in attack.

France have not lost in their last seven meetings with Ireland, recording four victories and three draws against the Boys in Green. The last time Ireland beat France was on October 14, 1981, when goals from Frank Stapleton and Michael Robinson helped them on their way to a famous win in the 1982 World Cup qualifying stage.

Reyna, Dest & the USMNT players who are in the Champions League last 16

A number of United States national team internationals are dotted throughout the biggest clubs in Europe in the knockout stage

The Champions League 2020-21 knockout stage has arrived and there are a number of intriguing match-ups as Europe's elite battle it out for supremacy.

Littered among some of the top teams are a selection of U.S. national team stars, with a number of players notably competing across the Bundesliga, La Liga and the Premier League.

Goal takes a look at the USMNT players who are involved in the Champions League last 16 this season.

GettyTyler Adams | RB Leipzig

Tyler Adams made his first-ever Champions League start for RB Leipzig in disappointing circumstances as the Bundesliga side suffered a 2-0 first-leg defeat against Liverpool in the last 16. The midfielder's experience of the competition prior to that point included substitute appearances against the likes of Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage.

AdvertisementGettyKonrad de la Fuente | Barcelona

A regular for Barcelona's youth and B teams, Konrad de la Fuente has featured in the Champions League twice this season, coming on as a substitute in victories over Dynamo Kiev and Ferencvaros. The teenage forward is still on the periphery of the first team at Camp Nou, but will be eager to make a mark at the club in the coming months.

GettySergino Dest | Barcelona

Netherlands-born Sergino Dest shone for Ajax in the Champions League in 2019-20 and has been a firm fixture for Barcelona in the 2020-21 edition of the competition. A flying wing-back, Dest scored for the Catalan giants in their 4-0 victory over Dynamo Kiev last November.

The 20-year-old started Barca's chastening 4-1 defeat in the first leg of the last 16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain, but endured a difficult evening as Kylian Mbappe and Co. ran riot. One moment of the game, when Gerard Pique could be heard reminding Dest that Mbappe was right-footed, was a reminder that the right-back still has plenty to learn and he will be keen to improve in the second leg.

Since making the switch to Juventus from Schalke, Weston McKennie has been impressive and he will be keen to play a part in the last 16 of the Champions League as the Bianconeri take on Porto.
