Fit again, Fidel Edwards ready for comeback

Fidel Edwards, the West Indies fast bowler, is confident that he is ready for a return to international cricket after nearly two years out

ESPNcricinfo staff09-May-2011Fidel Edwards, the West Indies fast bowler, is confident that he is ready for a return to international cricket after nearly two years out. Edwards, 29, made his first-class comeback in February after back surgery had kept him on the sidelines since the 2009 Champions League, and he was named for this week’s two-day practice match in Guyana. That could pave the way for Edwards to play in the first Test against Pakistan, starting on Thursday. He has had a successful comeback for Barbados in the regional four-day competition, and collected 22 wickets at 23.77 from his six outings.”I’m very happy to be back,” Edwards said. “I spent a long time out but I’ve made a full recovery and my body is ready to play five-day cricket again. I did a lot of good work with my trainer and the physio in Barbados and they were tremendous help to me during my comeback period.”I felt I bowled well for Barbados and that helped me. I spent some time at the camp in Barbados before the series started and I felt comfortable. I did some work with the head coach (Ottis Gibson) during the camp and things have been going smoothly.”I’m really looking ahead to what is upcoming. This series against Pakistan is a good place to start. I’m focussed and I’m looking to stay fit and strong. I’m looking to get wickets and help the West Indies to success. There is a lot to play for and I’m looking forward.”I have some goals I’m looking to achieve and one thing is to help the team win and move back up the ladder. This is vitally important to the team overall and to the supporters of West Indies cricket.”West Indies are currently seventh on the Test rankings table, but they will move up to sixth if they win the two-match series against Pakistan. However, they will need to turn around some poor form in the longest format; West Indies haven’t won any of their past 17 Tests, a winless streak stretching back to February 2009.

Leeds: Phil Hay drops Calvin Ramsay interest

Leeds United correspondent Phil Hay has shared the club’s interest in Aberdeen defender Calvin Ramsay.

The Lowdown: Ramsay profiled

Ramsay is just 18 years of age who is primarily a right-back who can also play as a right midfielder.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-42/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Already a Scotland U21 international, Ramsay has made 38 senior appearances for Aberdeen, contributing to 10 goals in the process.

Labelled as ‘quality’ by Paul Robinson, Ramsay was linked with a move to Elland Road earlier this year, and it looks as if he is still on the radar after Jesse Marsch replaced Marcelo Bielsa.

The Latest: Hay’s claim

Hay shared a story on The Athletic on Saturday morning following a record attendance at Elland Road for Leeds’ U23s clash with Man City.

He revealed that the Whites are tracking Ramsay, who would ‘not take long to move into first-team contention’, with the reporter even calling Aberdeen’s gem a ‘rising star north of the border’.

The Verdict: First signing?

It looks as if Leeds will have to act fast when it comes to Ramsay as Liverpool are thought to be planning a bid for the teenager.

Therefore, it looks as if Ramsay could well be Marsch’s first signing as manager, despite RB Salzburg’s Brenden Aaronson remaining a top target heading into the summer.

Ramsay’s potential arrival may pose question marks on Cody Drameh’s Elland Road future, with Bournemouth reportedly making an enquiry for the youngster ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Clinical South Africa surge into quarter-finals

The World Cup finally reached Eden Gardens, and the sparse crowd that turned up on an overcast day were treated to a JP Duminy special that lifted South Africa from the dumps, and set up a facile win

The Bulletin by Nitin Sundar15-Mar-2011
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsShot selection and selflessness epitomised JP Duminy’s fine innings•Getty ImagesThe World Cup finally reached Eden Gardens, and the sparse crowd that turned up on an overcast day were treated to a JP Duminy special that lifted South Africa from the dumps, and set up a facile win. Ireland’s effort began like a dream and ended like a nightmare as they showcased the inconsistency that holds back upwardly-mobile Associate teams. There was disciplined, if somewhat limited, bowling; there were breath-taking fielding efforts to go with grassed sitters; and there was the glaring inability to land the knockout punch, as they let things drift after hustling their opponents into a corner. Duminy was ready when they ran out of steam, and made them pay with a well-paced innings. If Dale Steyn doesn’t get you, Morne Morkel will, and Ireland found this out the hard way, chasing a tall score on a wicket with true bounce. Morkel removed the openers with his menacing lengths and the back-up bowlers, led by Robin Peterson, ensured there was no escape route for the middle order. Under lights, the game petered out into a mismatch, Ireland’s first in a spirited World Cup campaign, and confirmed South Africa’s entry into the quarters, while the jostling continues for the remaining spots from Group B.The one-sided finish seemed unlikely when Ireland’s trademark enthusiasm had reduced South Africa to 117 for 5 by the 27th over. Ireland’s initial brilliance was epitomised by two outstanding efforts on the field – first, George Dockrell moved rapidly to his left from a widish third man, tumbled, yet held on to a fierce upper cut from Hashim Amla. Then, John Mooney caught a struggling Graeme Smith short with a fierce pick up and throw from midwicket. Smith’s exit in the tenth over exposed South Africa’s middle order and they continued to wobble as Jacques Kallis was run out for the second successive innings, and Faf du Plessis guided tamely into the slips. Ironically, AB de Villiers’ replacement helped South Africa stem the rot that might have never set in if he had been playing. de Villiers’ absence allowed Morne van Wyk to bat at No. 3 and Colin Ingram at No. 7, and both batsmen played crucial hands to propel South Africa.Smart Stats

The win is South Africa’s seventh by a margin of hundred or more runs in World Cups. The 131-run margin of defeat is Ireland’s biggest in World Cups, surpassing their 129-run loss to New Zealand in 2007.

Eden Gardens hosted its 23rd ODI, the most for any ground in India. It has hosted 14 day-night games, which is the third highest among all Indian grounds.

JP Duminy’s became the second batsman after Adam Gilchrist to be dismissed for 99 in a World Cup match. Overall, there have been 36 occasions when a player has been dismissed in the nineties in World Cups.

The 87-run stand between Duminy and Colin Ingram is the highest for the sixth wicket for South Africa in World Cups. The highest sixth-wicket stand for South Africa in ODIs is the 137 between Hansie Cronje and Shaun Pollock against Zimbabwe in 1997.

The 76 runs conceded by Trent Johnston in his ten overs is the highest by an Irish bowler in a World Cup (completed spell of ten overs). The highest number of runs conceded by an Irish bowler in ODIs is 95 in nine overs by Peter Connell against New Zealand in 2008.

Robin Peterson’s 3 for 32 is his third three-wicket haul and his second-best bowling performance in ODIs after his 3 for 22 against England in Chennai.

By his own admission, van Wyk’s batting is not “poetry in motion”, and his cameo at No. 3 justified that evaluation. His loose on-the-up drives without much foot movement left him prone to edges and soft dismissals, and he was lucky to escape twice, with Kevin O’Brien and Paul Stirling spilling straightforward chances. The reprieves had no impact on van Wyk, who kept backing himself to clear the infield, until George Dockrell slipped a perceptive arm-ball past him in the 16th over. van Wyk had by then provided the early momentum, that allowed Duminy and Ingram the time to settle in before turning things around.Duminy initially chose caution against Dockrell’s attacking line outside off, one that spinners have used to torment in him the past. He kept deflecting and nudging, lapping and steering for ones and twos, and his inventiveness inevitably led to the Irish dropping their guard. Ingram cashed in when they delivered loose deliveries, targeting the square fields with a series of powerful horizontal-bat shots. Johnston castled him in the 40th over, but by then South Africa had wrested control. In the meantime, Duminy had seamlessly shifted gears from nurdle to attack mode, and was on the verge of hitting overdrive. After 46 boundary-less balls, his first four came through the most audacious of reverse-sweeps. By the time he brought up his half-century, caressing Johnston into the covers, his strike-rate was nudging the 80s. Ingram’s dismissal forced him to reassess the situation, and he chose to delay the Powerplay to the absolute end.He had chugged along to 68 when the Powerplay came on by default in the 46th over. A couple of quiet overs from Mooney and Boyd Rankin suggested a whimpering finish. Duminy, however, lined up Trent Johnston for special treatment in the 49th over, dumping him for four and six over the leg side, before forcing another boundary to third man. With three balls to go, and 99 against his name, Duminy did not push the single. He instead looked for the straight six and perished in the outfield. In a sense, it was a fitting end to an innings that was all about shot selection and selflessness.Match Timeline

Leeds: Danny Murphy criticises Rodrigo

Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy has criticised Leeds United forward Rodrigo over one moment in the 4-0 defeat against Manchester City.

The lowdown: Humbling loss for Leeds

The Whites ended up on the wrong side of a mauling at Elland Road despite being competitive in the contest for the most part.

Goals from Rodri, Nathan Ake, Gabriel Jesus and Fernandinho condemned Jess Marsch’s side to a defeat which leaves Leeds 17th in the Premier League, five points clear of Everton, who have two games in hand.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates-2/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Despite the heavy scoreline, the hosts were able to carve out opportunities to attack, although one pundit was less than impressed with the quality in the final third.

The latest: Murphy slams Rodrigo

Speaking live on Match of the Day (Saturday, April 30), former Liverpool ace Murphy slammed Rodrigo for his inability to find Raphinha and take advantage of a promising moment.

The 45-year-old fumed: “These are the moments you don’t get very often against the top sides. In the first half, they have quite a few of them. No awareness, don’t even think he knew he was there. Ends up being a poor shot.”

Overall the Spaniard lost possession 14 times (third-most of any Leeds player), misplaced nine of his 32 passes (28%) and was replaced on 83 minutes following a 6.60 rated display from Sofascore.

The verdict: Poor showing

Despite the calibre of opposition, this was a below-par performance from Rodrigo and his team-mates which leaves Marsch’s side fully embroiled in a relegation battle in the run-in.

The 31-year-old remains on six goals and one assist from 30 appearances this season in the frequent absences of Patrick Bamford, a far from fearsome tally from the versatile Spaniard. Indeed, criticisms like the one from Murphy might explain why goals have been so hard to come by for him, if he keeps making the wrong decisions in attack.

With fixtures against Arsenal and Chelsea up next, Leeds and indeed Rodrigo will have to learn from their squandered chances fast and capitalise on each and every one in order to ease their relegation fears.

Leeds: Hay drops Ramsay transfer update

Phil Hay has dropped an update on the future of reported Leeds United transfer target Calvin Ramsay.

What’s the word?

In a recent Q&A on The Athletic, the Leeds United correspondent revealed that, following reports of Victor Orta’s interest in a £4m move for the Aberdeen right-back, the 18-year-old is indeed a target of the Spanish sporting director in the upcoming summer transfer window.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds United news and rumours!”]

When asked for an update on the Whites’ potential summer targets, Hay said: “Calvin Ramsay at Aberdeen too.”

A big upgrade

Considering the sheer amount of potential Ramsay quite clearly possesses, in addition to the fact that Luke Ayling has endured a disappointing 2021/22 campaign for the Whites, the argument that the Scotland U21 international would be an upgrade on the 30-year-old is a rather easy one to make.

Indeed, over his 24 Scottish Premiership appearances this season, the £540k-rated talent has been in exceptional form for Jim Goodwin’s side, scoring one goal, registering five assists and creating three big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 1.8 key passes, 0.8 interceptions, 0.8 tackles and winning 3.4 duels – at a success rate of 51% – per game.

These returns have seen the £880-per-week prodigy average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 6.92, ranking him as the Dons’ sixth-best performer in the top flight of Scottish football.

In comparison, over Ayling’s 26 Premier League outings this term, the £3.6m-rated full-back has bagged two goals, provided two assists and created four big chances, in addition to making an average of 0.5 key passes, 1.1 interceptions, 2.8 tackles and winning 5.8 duels – at a success rate of 51% – per fixture.

These metrics have seen the £35k-per-week defender average an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.61, ranking him as Jesse Marsch’s eighth-worst player in the English top flight.

As such, while it is true that Ayling betters Ramsay’s returns in some areas of his game, considering the fact that the Englishman is 12 years the 18-year-old’s senior, it is undeniable that the Aberdeen starlet represents a long-term upgrade on the Arsenal academy graduate for the Whites.

However, with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool also reported to be extremely interested in a move for Ramsay at the end of the current campaign, Orta must act quickly if he is to replace the potentially outbound Ayling with the Scottish sensation this summer.

Wolves: 90min report drops Toney claim

According to a report from 90min, Wolves are among the clubs interested in signing Brentford striker Ivan Toney in the summer transfer window.

The lowdown: An interesting rise to stardom

Signed by Newcastle United from Northampton Town as a youngster, Toney struggled to make the grade in the North East and after a string of loan moves was eventually sold on a permanent basis to Peterborough United in 2018.

From there, the powerful frontman made his name, scoring 49 goals in 94 appearances before making the switch to a then Championship Brentford side.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/all-the-latest-from-wolves-3/” title=”All the latest from Wolves!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Following on from a stunning 31 strikes and ten assists last season, helping the west London club earn promotion, Toney has made a successful start to life in the Premier League, including a dominant performance at Molineux – the Englishman scored and assisted in a 2-0 win, earning Whoscored’s Man of the Match up against the game’s lowest-rated player, Max Kilman.

The latest: Report cites major interest

As per the report from 90min, Wolves, Arsenal, West Ham, Everton and Newcastle are all keen on the 26-year-old.

It’s claimed that despite Toney wanting to sign a new deal to stay at Brentford, the Wanderers are ‘keeping a watchful’ eye on the situation.

The report also states that the were the London club to sell their talismanic frontman, they are likely to hold out for a bid in excess of £50million for the man hailed as ‘special’ by manager Thomas Frank.

The verdict: Priced out

Albeit Toney has taken to life in the top flight with impressive ease, scoring 12 times so far in the league this season, shelling out the suggested £50million plus for a man in his first elite-level campaign is not a deal worth pursuing at Molineux.

Whilst manager Bruno Lage and executive chairman Jeff Shi will almost certainly be hoping to add more senior support to Raul Jimenez during the summer transfer window, this move at this price seems farfetched.

Clearly fitting a certain profile of striker as a powerful presence, Wolves may well be in the market for a direct Jimenez understudy. To that end, when using FBref to find players with closely matching attributes to Toney, Athletic Bilbao ace Raul Garcia and Alaves’ Joselu make up the top two, as Jimenez himself is actually the third-closest likeness.

West Ham: Moyes drops Antonio update

David Moyes has dropped a worrying update on the condition of West Ham United centre-forward Michail Antonio.

What’s been said?

In recent comments cited by The Guardian, the West Ham manager revealed that he is concerned that the 31-year-old’s involvement with the Jamaica national side – for whom the striker played three fixtures in seven days over the Premier League’s winter break – could prove detrimental to his own team, as the forward is currently the Hammers’ only recognised centre-forward.

Speaking about Antonio’s international commitments, the 58-year-old said: “He has been away a couple of times now and I’ve had concerns about it, yes, because it is new to him. It is not something he has been doing since he was 21 or 22 or something like that. Obviously, they are long travels if you’re going to Jamaica… they’re long journeys to play the games.”

Fans will be seething

Considering the fact that Moyes had all 31 days of January to bring a new centre-forward to the London Stadium, the fact that the Irons boss is already complaining about Antonio’s involvement with Jamaica is sure to have left Hammers fans seething at the 58-year-old.

Indeed, the fact that the 31-year-old forward has to travel considerable distances to play for his international side is unfortunate, however, should Moyes have successfully managed to get a deal over the line for a new striker at any point in the January transfer window, rather than seeing a flurry of late bids either fall through or simply be rejected out of hand, it would have considerably eased the burden placed on Antonio’s shoulders in the second half of the season.

The £10.8m-rated striker’s situation with Jamaica is something that the Scotsman was fully aware of during the winter market, and is something that the former Manchester United manager could have quite easily addressed and solved by being much more organised and efficient with his January dealings.

As such, should Moyes be looking for someone to blame for Antonio’s fatigue, he should not be criticising the scheduling of the World Cup qualifiers, but rather be taking a long hard look in the mirror.

Tom Barclay makes Tyrick Mitchell claim

Journalist Tom Barclay has made a claim on Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell, as per GiveMeSport.

The Lowdown: Mitchell injured v Leicester

The defender has been a regular during Patrick Vieira’s first season in charge at Selhurst Park, starting every Premier League game so far in 2021/22.

Unfortunately, the 22-year-old was forced off through injury in the 2-1 defeat at Leicester on Sunday, with his availability for this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Chelsea now seemingly up in the air.

He was due to undergo scans on a calf problem on Monday, and Barclay has made a claim unrelated to the injury on the full-back.

The Latest: Barclay’s comments on Mitchell

Barclay was talking to GiveMeSport regarding Mitchell after what he has heard from the Palace ‘dressing room’.

The reporter claimed that the full-back is ‘really good’ with the Eagles youngsters and wants to help them both on and off the training pitch, outlining:

“He’s really good with the other youngsters, which is funny because he’s only 22.

“But the younger players like him, he spends a lot of time with them, having food and doing warm-ups. He knows the path he’s been on, and wants to help others and he is well-liked in the dressing room is what I’m told.”

The Verdict: Mitchell to stay?

Mitchell has been linked with Chelsea, Manchester City, Newcastle and Tottenham in recent weeks, but it appears as if he is loving life at Selhurst Park.

He seems to be passionate about helping the Eagles’ academy prospects as they look to follow in his footsteps, so hopefully he will remain a Palace player beyond the summer.

Mitchell is also the only senior left-back on the books for Vieira at this moment in time, so losing his services would be a big blow to Palace, particularly given his fine performances in recent months.

Liverpool weighing Kroos bid

As per El Nacional, a major Liverpool transfer update has surfaced as Fenway Sports Group weigh a bid for Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos – with his stance also detailed.

The Lowdown: Liverpool eye midfield additions…

As previously reported, the Reds and manager Jurgen Klopp have seemingly set the club’s sights on bolstering midfield options in 2022.

Indeed, the likes of Denis Zakaria, who could leave for Borussia Monchengladbach for free at the end of 2021/2022, is on Liverpool’s radar while Borussia Dortmund ace Jude Bellingham is also appreciated at Anfield.

However, it appears the Bundesliga isn’t Klopp’s only port of call as El Nacional share news on midfielder Kroos and his links to the club.

The Latest: FSG weigh £25m bid…

As per El Nacional, despite Kroos being happy at the Bernabeu, Real president Florentino Perez apparently has ‘no plans to meet’ with the player over a contract extension as his current deal looks set to expire in 2023.

This coming summer, as a result, will be the Galacticos’ ‘last chance’ to sell for a profit as things stand as the German star also knows he’ll have ‘interesting offers’.

As such, Kroos himself ‘only anticipates’ one destination in the Premier League and ‘specifically’ Liverpool – where he would ‘also be delighted’ to work under Klopp.

Liverpool’s interest, meanwhile, is thought to be ‘very serious’ – so much so they ‘would be willing’ to pay around €30 million (£25m) to secure his services.

The Verdict: Big claim…

The 32-year-old being open to a Merseyside move to work under Klopp, whilst the club also ponder a £25m offer, certainly comes as a big claim.

Given his age, you would think Kroos’ potential signing may come as quick fix when compared to the likes of Bellingham and Zakaria who, comparatively, come with much longer shelf lives.

However, given his statistics, there is little arguing the World Cup winner would add serious quality to Klopp’s midfield.

According to WhoScored, the £210,000-per-week star has averaged far more key passes (2.4) and shots at goal per 90 (2.4) domestically than any of Liverpool’s current central midfield players.

As well as this, Kroos has completed 94.9% of his passes to teammates in that time – far eclipsing that of any Reds man with more than one league start (WhoScored).

If Liverpool can secure a move later this year, it would certainly back Klopp with some serious quality and depth in the middle of the park.
