Winners & losers of Alexis Sanchez’s transfer to Manchester United

Arsenal's best player has moved to Old Trafford, much to the dismay of both the Gunners and Manchester City, who had been favourites to sign him

Getty ImagesWinner: Jose Mourinho

It's been quite the start to the New Year for Jose Mourinho. Having successfully drawn Antonio Conte into an undignified war of words with his customary lack of humility, the Manchester United boss has landed Pep Guardiola's primary January transfer target.

Guardiola, of course, fully backed Manchester City's decision to withdraw from the race to sign Alexis Sanchez, having understandably concluded that the Chile international was not sufficiently committed to joining the club, given his sudden interest in earning more money elsewhere.

However, Mourinho will not care in the slightest. After being forced to endure so much talk of how everyone wants to play for Pep, the Portuguese will be delighted at having shown the Catalan that both he and United retain the ability to trump their great rivals.

AdvertisementGettyWinner: Fernando Felicevich

As we learned from the farcical fees involved in Paul Pogba's return to Old Trafford in 2016, Manchester United, like so many other clubs, have no issue with heeding to the outrageous demands of avaricious agents.

Therefore, it was not in the least bit surprising that the Red Devils were willing to deal with Alexis Sanchez's representative, Fernando Felicevich, who had agreed financial terms with City on behalf of his client, only to then break that accord when it became clear that there was more money to be made at United.

Indeed, the total package is now set to surpass the £60m deal that City had agreed with Arsenal last summer, which is staggering when one considers that we are talking about a 29-year-old with no re-sale value.

Given the source of their considerable wealth, City are hardly in a position to take the moral high ground on such matters but both the club and Guardiola deserve credit for refusing to be drawn into a bidding war by Felicevich.

It would be nice if other clubs followed suit and adopted a similarly strong stance against agents but, at the end of the day, City took a stand because they could afford to do so.

Guardiola ultimately decided that with Gabriel Jesus set to make a quicker-than-expected return from injury, the runaway Premier League leaders did not need to sign Alexis at all costs, particularly as making him their highest-paid player could have destabilised the squad.

United, by contrast, wanted to make a statement signing and are willing to pay whatever it takes to stop their city rivals from becoming even stronger, even if it meant making another agent even richer.

So, while Felicevich has acted with little integrity, he is poised to secure both a transfer and more money for his client.

In short, he is getting exactly what both he and Alexis wanted and, in the modern game, the bottom line really is all that matters.

Getty ImagesWinner: Sergio Aguero

"It's an honour for me to have Aguero under my command," Pep Guardiola enthused earlier this month. "Aguero is the kind of player that in a matter of seconds can score two goals. He is an essential player for us."

In light of the persistent pursuit of Alexis, Aguero could have been forgiven for querying his manager's definition of the word 'essential', given the Chilean's arrival would have seen him slip to third place in the pecking order at the Etihad, behind both the former Barcelona forward and Gabriel Jesus.

As it is, though, Aguero is now in a position to continue strengthening the argument that he should remain City's first-choice centre-forward, even after his young Brazilian team-mate returns from injury.

Sunday's trip to Anfield did not go well for Aguero, whose ineffective display contrasted starkly with the exhibition of exuberance by Liverpool counterpart Roberto Firmino at the other end of the field.

However, the Argentina international has still scored four times in four outings since the turn of the year and now, following the collapse of the Alexis deal, he has even more time as City's undisputed No.9 to prove himself truly essential to the City cause.

Getty ImagesLoser: Arsene Wenger

To paraphrase a famous movie quote, you either leave a hero, or hang around long enough to become the villain. This is the sorry fate now facing Arsene Wenger, who runs the risk of ruining his legacy with his gross mismanagement of Arsenal's season.

Indeed, for some disgruntled fans, the Frenchman has long since become the cause of the club's problems, not the solution to them.

Wenger holds the kind of power at the Emirates that is now almost non-existent anywhere else in football, so he has to take the majority share of the blame for the fact that the Gunners allowed their two best players, Alexis and Mesut Ozil, enter the final year of their respective contracts, thus creating a debilitating air of uncertainty surrounding the club.

As a result of Wenger's stubbornness and total lack of a contingency plan – which was painfully exposed by the ham-fisted attempt to sign Thomas Lemar before the close of the summer transfer window – Arsenal are now set to lose their main forward to a top-four rival midway through a season which already looks likely to end without qualification for the Champions League.

Whereas Liverpool were prepared and extremely well remunerated for the loss of Philippe Coutinho, Arsenal are desperately trying to plug the holes on a sinking ship.

Indeed, should Arsenal fail to finish in the top four for the second successive season, it is difficult to foresee them reclaiming their position among England's elite any time soon.

Wenger has had several chances to bow out on top, with an FA Cup win. Instead, he looks set to leave Arsenal exactly where he found them 22 years ago: languishing in mid-table.

That would be a sad end for the man responsible for 'The Invincibles'. But, to paraphrase another famous movie quote, if Wenger is looking for the guilty, he need only look into a mirror.

Giroud keen to win Euro 2024Desperate to add missing trophy to his cabinetWas cautious in his assessment after Euro 2024 drawWHAT HAPPENED?

The forward was keeping a close eye on the Euro 2024 draw, which unfolded in Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie on Saturday, and saw France being drawn into Group D alongside Austria, the Netherlands, and the playoff winner A (among Poland, Wales, Finland and Estonia). It is one of the tournaments that Giroud is yet to win in his illustrious career and the 37-year-old vowed to keep no stone unturned to finish on the podium on July 14 in Berlin. It could potentially be a milestone match for the former Arsenal hitman as the forward revealed that he is contemplating hanging up his boots after the continental event.

AdvertisementWHAT GIROUD SAID ABOUT RETIREMENT

Speaking to , Giroud said: "I am missing this Euro. If we win it, I will bow out. That might also be the case if we don't make it to the end. I'm enjoying every moment. I said to some guys that if we won the 2022 World Cup, I was withdrawing. But I am hungry for titles with my country. I have a lot of hopes and ambitions. If it goes well, it is possible that it could be a possibility."

GettyWHAT GIROUD SAID ABOUT THE DRAW

Giroud was content with the draw results as he feels they have been placed in a relatively easier group than in 2021, where they had to take on Germany, Portugal, and Hungary in the round-robin stage.

"We know the Netherlands very well, it has always been contested against them. We will wait for the barrage because on paper, Wales and Poland are perhaps more armed. It is perhaps a draw more lenient than the last Euro," he said. "Austria has good young people. There are guys who play in big clubs. We have to move into this group but it won't be easy and it will make for good matches."

Endrick set to join Real Madrid next summerChooses ex-Blancos star over MessiBrazil to face Argentina in crunch CONMEBOL gameWHAT HAPPENED?

Endrick has enjoyed a rapid rise to prominence over the past year at Palmeiras. The Brazilian youngster impressed enough to attract the attention of Real Madrid, who triggered the €60 million (£52m/$64m) release clause in his contract last December.

AdvertisementCesar Greco/PalmeirasTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Endrick is set to complete his switch to Santiago Bernabeu next summer, but is already getting his taste of football at the highest level with Brazil. The 17-year-old made his international debut as the Selecao slumped to a surprise 2-1 loss against Colombia in their latest 2026 World Cup qualifier, which left them down in fifth in the CONMEBOL standings. The fixture list doesn't get any easier for Brazil either, with a huge clash against arch-rivals Argentina up next.

WHAT ENDRICK SAID

Ahead of that contest, Endrick has admitted that he prefers Real Madrid and Portugal legend Ronaldo to Messi, despite the fact the Inter Miami man now has eight Ballon d'Or awards and a World Cup winners' medal to his name. "About Messi, it's phenomenal. Very good, best in the world again," the Palmeiras star told a press conference. "I just want to enjoy the moment of being able to play against him, being in the same stadium as him, looking at him up close, I only saw him in the video game. Messi is a great player, but I'm more of a fan of Cristiano Ronaldo. Now I'm seeing Messi up close, it's going to be wonderful."

Endrick does not, however, consider Ronaldo to be the greatest player of all time. In his eyes, that title belongs to the late Brazil icon Pele, as he added: "Pele is the King. There is no one who will come close to him. There is no one to be compared to. I thank God that he existed and I could have seen his films. Technology allows me today. I thought it was really cool."

ICC blasts USACA's selection policies, player treatment

The ICC’s ACSU has recently received a formal complaint related to national team selection procedures of the USA Cricket Association, according to information contained in a 40-page report delivered at the ICC annual conference last week in Barbados

Peter Della Penna01-Jul-2015The ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit has recently received a formal complaint related to national team selection procedures of the USA Cricket Association, according to information contained in a 40-page report delivered at the ICC annual conference last week in Barbados. The complaint references a threat of legal action “by the parent of an aggrieved child” against the USA U-19 selection process, with the complaint to the ICC ACSU alleging that the selection process was “corrupt” and should be investigated.Though the ICC report did not name any individual, the complaint is believed to reference Shyam Patnam who, as ESPNcricinfo reported last week, was pursuing arbitration with USACA over the USA U-19 selection process held in May. Patnam separately alleged in a letter to USACA that three players were unfairly selected after not attending the trial while four other players benefitted from nepotism, due to relations with current or former USACA administrators. He added that the seven players should be replaced in the USA U-19 squad by his son, Aravind, and six others. Patnam’s initial request for an appeals hearing with USACA was ignored, prompting him to hire California sports attorney Jeremy Evans in a bid to escalate the matter. In addition to the mention of the USA U-19 selection process, the ICC report also outlined numerous instances of substandard selection processes for USA’s other national teams, as well as accusations of politically motivated support staff appointments. The report, which was prepared by a review group led by ICC chief executive, David Richardson, and head of global development, Tim Anderson, states that many USA players and stakeholders referred to the board’s method of staff appointments “as a joke” and felt that such decisions “were damaging to the team’s ability to perform at the highest level” due to the incompetence of support staff.USA technical director Robin Singh’s reputation as an Indian Premier League and Caribbean Premier League title-winning coach was highlighted as one of the few things that served to be beneficial to players. It came with a caveat though, that his coaching pedigree and acumen are helpful only when he is available. The report cited Singh’s prolonged absences, due to his franchise T20 commitments, as “an impediment to the development of the best players and teams in the US.””It is strongly felt that for USA cricket to meet its potential, the recruitment of full-time, competent coaching resources based in the USA is a fundamental requirement,” the report stated.Worryingly, the report also cited instances in which the welfare of USA’s players is undermined by USACA’s inability to provide them proper insurance coverage prior to and during their participation at ICC tournaments held in the USA and overseas. It is part of a pattern of administrative behavior in which players interviewed told the ICC that they felt “disrespected and not supported by USACA.””Such a feeling was exacerbated when, at times, USACA was unable to provide appropriate medical insurance for national team players,” the report stated. “This saw players being asked to sign pre-tour/event waivers,” which would have absolved USACA of financial liability in the case of injury. On some occasions, the report cited, players were not reimbursed when they sustained injures and required medical attention while playing or training for the USA.In its defence, USACA claimed that the geographical size of the country, combined with insufficient funds for preparation and lack of vacation days the players are able to obtain from their day jobs make it challenging for the national team to get together for pre-tournament training in order to produce consistently positive performances. The ICC report countered that even though these arguments have merit, the obstacles should not be as debilitating as they are made out to be.”These challenges are important, however, they are not insurmountable with the involvement of competent, properly motivated people, the development of partnerships and the raising of income. Noting the apparent lack of confidence and distrust within the cricket community about USACA’s capacity to implement a merit-based high performance system, it is, however, doubtful that the injection of additional funds only would lead to better on-field performances,” the report noted. As for women’s cricket initiatives, the ICC expressed disappointment in the fact that the number of female hard-ball players in the country had only risen from 75 to 135 from 2011 to 2015, despite USA’s participation in the 2011 ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier in Bangladesh. The data submitted by USACA, and similar figures reported by other governing bodies in the Americas, resulted in the ICC pulling the plug on funding ICC Americas women’s tournaments for World Cup and World T20 berths until better efforts are made by the respective local governing bodies like USACA to develop “more robust” playing pools and domestic structures for women.”The review group is of the view that, given the right environment and support, the USA has significant potential to develop an internationally competitive women’s team in a relatively short period of time. This is largely due to the possibility of talented female athletes in the US that have grown up playing softball, hockey or even lacrosse being able to transition into cricket, and/or females with cricket playing expatriate heritage being given greater opportunities to play competitively.”

Ultimate Monaco dream team: Mbappe, Henry and Thuram in, Tchouameni out

Monaco has had few star players represent them before leaving for pastures new. Which of them will make it into the ultimate XI?

Ligue 1 outfit Monaco are widely regarded as one of the best clubs in the world at developing and improving players.

They also have a reputation for signing potential superstars and later selling them for a huge profit.

A fair few stars of the modern game have turned out for Monaco in the past, including the likes of James Rodriguez, Youri Tielemans, Bernardo Silva, Thierry Henry and more.

And then there are players such as Kylian Mbappe and Layvin Kurzawa who have come out of the Monaco academy.

Of all the stars who have played for the club, who will make it into an ultimate Monaco dream team?

(C)Getty ImagesFabien Barthez | Goalkeeper

The first-choice goalkeeper for the French national team for a long time, Barthez was possibly more known for his stint with Manchester United.

But he played for Monaco before that and made a big impact.

After turning out for the likes of Toulouse and Marseille, Barthez moved to Monaco in 1995, making 189 appearances in all competitions for the club, winning two Ligue 1 and a Trophee des Champions titles.

Characterized by his bald head, Barthez was not a tall goalkeeper, but had good physical ability and amazing reflexes.

He spent five years at Monaco before joining United in 2000.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesMaicon | Defender

In the late 2000s, Maicon was praised as "the world's best full-back" for his overwhelming attacking abilities.

He played at Monaco for two years from 2004 to 2006 and made 81 appearances. Although he failed to win a major title at Monaco, he caught the attention of Inter with his fine performances.

Maicon was known for physicality, speed, and stamina to run up and down the right wing. He also had the ability to send in high-precision crosses and had a powerful shot on him.

During his six years at Inter, he won Serie A four times and won the Champions League.

(C)Getty ImagesLilian Thuram | Defender

Legendary French defender Lilian Thuram, who is famous for scoring two spectacular goals in the 1998 France World Cup semi-final against Croatia, was a Monaco youth product.

He became a regular player shortly after making his professional debut in 1991 and made 186 appearances in all competitions before moving to Parma in 1996.

A defender who could play as a right-back and a centre-back with no issues whatsoever, Thuram was one of the best in the world during the '90s and early '00s.

He ended up playing for the likes of Juventus and Barcelona during his career.

With 142 national team caps, he is still holds the record of having made the most appearances for France.

Abidal, one of Barcelona's sextuplet winners of 2008/09 season, also played for Monaco in his youth and made his first-team debut at the age of 21.

He was a bit of a late bloomer, though, and only really established himself as a world-class player after leaving the club, impressing for Lille and Lyon before earning himself a move to Camp Nou.

At Barcelona, he played nearly 200 official games between 2007-2013 and was part of Pep Guardiola's great Barcelona side, winning 16 titles.

He had a liver tumor in 2011 that nearly put him on the verge of retirement, but he made a miraculous comeback and continued playing. In 2013-14, he returned to Monaco for one season.

After retiring in 2014, he held several directorial positions at Barcelona.

The Gunners' convincing performance against the Magpies left Arteta in awe of his players as he wholeheartedly praised the team for their dominance against a formidable opponent. The manager also claimed that he was left impressed by his team's off-the-ball movements which were lacking in their defeat against FC Porto in the Champions League earlier in the week.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day after the game, Arteta said, "I'm really happy with the performance against a Newcastle team who are really really good. The boys were really good, really aggressive and we deserved to win the game. They [Newcastle] have a lot of resources to create issues but we continued in the same way, we maintained our rhythm and it was a joy to watch the team play.

"We are really happy, we have to continue to do the things that we are doing well. There are still things that we can do better and we are bringing big players back from injury so that is a big boost. Against Porto, we were ourselves with the ball but not without the ball. It was a big lesson and you learn a lot from those moments."

Sven Botman's own goal handed the north London club the lead in the 18th minute before Kai Havertz doubled his team's lead in the first half. Chandimal relieved of T20I captaincy

Sri Lanka’s selectors have relieved Dinesh Chandimal of the Twenty20 captaincy, and the ODI vice-captaincy, appointing Lasith Malinga and Lahiru Thirimanne in those roles, ahead of Sri Lanka’s tour of Ireland and England

Andrew Fidel Fernando23-Apr-2014Sri Lanka’s selectors have relieved Dinesh Chandimal of all his leadership positions, appointing Lasith Malinga as the T20I captain and Lahiru Thirimanne as vice-captain across all formats untill March 2015.Chandimal had had a poor run in limited-overs cricket, particularly in Asian conditions, but had maintained a good record in Tests, averaging 63.75 in 10 innings, since being named vice-captain in February last year. His across-the-board demotion, however, is a strong indication the selectors feel Chandimal must devote himself solely to improving his batting.Though his on-field leadership had reaped positive results, Chandimal has shown little batting promise in T20 cricket, in which he averages 13.30 after 20 innings. He had initially impressed in the ODI team, but his returns even in that format have subsided after he had been named vice-captain. Since Februrary 2013, Chandimal has averaged 25.55, with a strike rate of 72, largely batting from lower in the order than he prefers.Chandimal had chosen to leave himself out of the XI for the semi-final and final of the recent World T20, leaving Malinga to lead the team to victory, and had been replaced in the XI by Thirimanne, who struck an important 44 in the semi-final.The selectors had made Chandimal the youngest Sri Lanka captain in any format, at 23, following largely impressive returns in Australia in January last year. Chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya had said at the time that Sri Lanka sought to develop a young leadership core, in preparation for the looming retirements of former captains Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan. Jayawardene and Sangakkara had in any case indicated they would not accept leadership roles in the twilight of their careers.Thirimanne has impressed with the bat in recent months, picking up a Player-of-the-Tournament award for top-scoring at the Asia Cup. His tournament aggregate of 279 included a century in the final. Averaging 49 from 14 innings in the top three, he has been a more reliable ODI selection than Chandimal, particularly in the past year.Sri Lanka embark on a full away tour of England next month, before full home tours against South Africa and Pakistan follow in July and August. They have six Tests, eleven ODIs and at least two T20 internationals scheduled for the next four months.

Ruck signs with Northern Districts

Sian Ruck, the New Zealand women pacer, has signed up with Northern Districts from Wellington for the upcoming domestic season

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Jun-2014Sian Ruck, the New Zealand Womens pacer, has moved to Northern Districts from Wellington for the upcoming domestic season.Ruck, who was one of four New Zealand women players to be handed professional contracts by New Zealand Cricket last year, said she was looking for a fresh start after a poor season with Wellington where she picked up just three wickets from nine innings. She also said she was enthused by the prospect of playing under the new coach Mark Coles and coaching mentor Cliff Dickeson.”It has not been an easy decision to leave Wellington as it’s my home and I identify myself as a Wellingtonian,” Ruck said. “But after a disappointing 2013-14 domestic season, I believe a fresh start and a new environment is the best way forward for me. I want to enjoy my cricket and to work my way back into the White Ferns.”Having the opportunity to work with Mark and Cliff again is very exciting. I’m also looking forward to playing alongside leaders such as Nicola Browne, Morna Nielsen, and Natalie Dodd. I am also pleased that I will get the chance to work with some of the young up and coming talent in the region.”Ruck’s signing was welcomed by Coles, who believed that her experience would benefit the rest of the squad.”I’m thrilled to have someone of Sian’s caliber as part of our team this year,” he said. “She brings strong bowling skills to the group but she also has leadership qualities that I think will add so much value. This is a new season for us with lots of change coming, and for the better.”Ruck has played 27 ODIs for New Zealand Women, taking 24 wickets at an average of 32.75. In T20s, she has 40 international wickets in 37 matches at an average of 17.20.
