Big names key in high-stakes contest

One point separates Sunrisers Hyderabad from Royal Challengers Bangalore, and while defeat will not rule out either side’s progress into the playoffs, it will certainly complicate it

O’Brien: Sunrisers should consider Milind for Ishant

Big pictureOne point separates Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore, who both occupy the middle portion of an exceedingly amorphous table, and who both have two games left to play. Neither absolutely win two out of two to reach the playoffs, but life will become rather more complicated for the team that loses their meeting on Friday.Going by form, this is a hard-to-predict clash that promises excitement. Sunrisers are on a three-match winning streak, and Royal Challengers have won five of their last seven completed games. On paper, Royal Challengers possess the better of two menacing top orders and Sunrisers the better of two mediocre middle orders, and while Mitchell Starc is form bowler of the IPL and the most obvious wicket-taking threat from either side, Sunrisers perhaps possess the deeper bowling attack with more experience of the conditions in Hyderabad. Both teams prefer batting first.Given the stage of the season, the result of the game may well hinge on the bigger names. In a match full of them, who will step up and make the decisive intervention?Form guideSunrisers Hyderabad WWWLW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Royal Challengers Bangalore LWWLWWatch out forThe last three times Royal Challengers have batted first, they’ve posted totals of 200, 226 and 235. They’ve not been nearly as dangerous while chasing, though. They’ve lost two of their last three games while batting second, and the other one – a rain-shortened game against Kolkata Knight Riders – could have gone either way. Sunrisers, meanwhile, have batted first in their last three matches and won all of them, but have only won one match out of five while chasing. The toss, therefore, might play a vital role.Bangalore’s struggles while chasing have coincided with their top three getting out relatively early. The new-ball contest that pits Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Trent Boult/Dale Steyn against Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli could prove an important sub-plot in the narrative of the game.Stats and trivia Chris Gayle needs 13 runs to get to 400 runs for the season. If he does so, Royal Challengers will have three batsmen – AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli are the others – in the 400 club. At this point, no other team has more than one representative. Moises Henriques tops Sunrisers’ batting averages – with 219 runs at 43.80 – and also has their best economy rate – 6.57 – among bowlers who have sent down more than 10 overs.

Reyna, Dest & the USMNT players who are in the Champions League last 16

A number of United States national team internationals are dotted throughout the biggest clubs in Europe in the knockout stage

The Champions League 2020-21 knockout stage has arrived and there are a number of intriguing match-ups as Europe's elite battle it out for supremacy.

Littered among some of the top teams are a selection of U.S. national team stars, with a number of players notably competing across the Bundesliga, La Liga and the Premier League.

Goal takes a look at the USMNT players who are involved in the Champions League last 16 this season.

GettyTyler Adams | RB Leipzig

Tyler Adams made his first-ever Champions League start for RB Leipzig in disappointing circumstances as the Bundesliga side suffered a 2-0 first-leg defeat against Liverpool in the last 16. The midfielder's experience of the competition prior to that point included substitute appearances against the likes of Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage.

AdvertisementGettyKonrad de la Fuente | Barcelona

A regular for Barcelona's youth and B teams, Konrad de la Fuente has featured in the Champions League twice this season, coming on as a substitute in victories over Dynamo Kiev and Ferencvaros. The teenage forward is still on the periphery of the first team at Camp Nou, but will be eager to make a mark at the club in the coming months.

GettySergino Dest | Barcelona

Netherlands-born Sergino Dest shone for Ajax in the Champions League in 2019-20 and has been a firm fixture for Barcelona in the 2020-21 edition of the competition. A flying wing-back, Dest scored for the Catalan giants in their 4-0 victory over Dynamo Kiev last November.

The 20-year-old started Barca's chastening 4-1 defeat in the first leg of the last 16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain, but endured a difficult evening as Kylian Mbappe and Co. ran riot. One moment of the game, when Gerard Pique could be heard reminding Dest that Mbappe was right-footed, was a reminder that the right-back still has plenty to learn and he will be keen to improve in the second leg.

Since making the switch to Juventus from Schalke, Weston McKennie has been impressive and he will be keen to play a part in the last 16 of the Champions League as the Bianconeri take on Porto. McKennie featured prominently enough for Juve in the group stage and even bagged a goal in December's 3-0 win over Barcelona.

New Zealand cruise to win after Sri Lanka's late collapse

New Zealand Women began their World T20 campaign with an easy seven-wicket win after a late collapse restricted Sri Lanka Women to 110 for 8 in Delhi

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Mar-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsNew Zealand Women began their World T20 campaign with an easy seven-wicket win after a late collapse restricted Sri Lanka Women to 110 for 8 in Delhi.Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat, and their opening pair of Chamari Atapattu and Yasoda Mendis stitched together a 39-run partnership. Mendis and Dilani Manodara built on that base, taking Sri Lanka to a promising position of 82 for 1 by the 13th over. The loss of Mendis to Amy Satterthwaite, however, sparked off a slide that undid the work of the top order.Manodara fell in the 15th over, after top-scoring with a 31-ball 37, and her wicket meant that the impetus Sri Lanka needed in the final leg of the innings did not materialize. They scraped a mere 23 runs off their last six overs for the loss of six wickets. Offspinner Leigh Kasperek took 2 for 19 but Sri Lanka also lost as many as three batsmen – including Manodara and captain Shashikala Siriwardene – to run-outs.New Zealand’s chase of 111 was clinical, despite a minor blip when they lost three wickets in as many overs. The openers, Suzie Bates and Rachel Priest, gave them early control adding 64 in the first 10 overs. Sara McGlashan and Satterthwaite then struck a flurry of boundaries to take New Zealand home with 25 balls to spare.

The Barcelona man was sent off in the 39th minute of the US' 2-1 loss to Trinidad and Tobago in the CONCACAF Nations League in November, with the full-back picking up two bookings in the space of 20 seconds. At the time, head coach Berhalter described the 23-year-old's actions as a "dumb mistake" but now he appears to have changed his tune.

When asked if he had spoken with Dest about the incident, he replied: “Yep. To me, it’s a great moment for the team. It’s a great learning experience for the group, it’s a great moment for us to grow as a team.

“It’s not only his reaction that I think we need to talk about, but I think it’s everybody’s reaction. What do we do when things like this happen? How do we avoid getting derailed as the collective?

“For him [it’s about] how this moment can put the team in a difficult position. I think that’s a great learning experience for all of us as we go into Copa América, [CONCACAF] Nations League, and the World Cup.”

While Dest, who is suspended for his country's semi-final Nations League clash against Jamaica on March 21, was criticised at the time for his costly actions, Berhalter clearly values his talents and it seems he still has a future with the national team.

WHAT NEXT?

If the USMNT win their semi-final match with Jamaica, they will either take on Panama or Mexico in the final of a tournament (March 24) they have won for the past two years. This may give them a boost ahead of the 2024 Copa America, which features 16 teams from the Americas such as Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and more, this summer.

It was Linley who inflicted the early damage, starting immediately after the opening stand had moved into three figures. He found the edge to have Godlemancaught behind by Steve Davies for 43 and point the way to a spell of four for 12in 34 deliveries.Owais Shah got off the mark with a six against Pragyan Ojha, the left-armspinner, but added just one more run before being bowled. Jaik Mickleburgh was next to go, trapped lbw without offering a stroke and he was followed back to the pavilion by the impressive Westley. The right-hander had laced his innings of 57 with some beautifully timed drivesamong his seven boundaries until finding the hands of cover point.Westley’s departure left Essex 135 for 4 and 16 runs later, Adam Wheaterdrove high to mid-off to provide Ojha with his solitary success. That left the home side needing a substantial partnership between James Foster and Ryan ten Doeschate if they were to get close to Surrey’s total of 315.For a while, they threatened to succeed but having added 46 in 11 overs, mainlyas the result of Ten Doeschate’s belligerence, Meaker embarked on a devastatingspell. In it, he claimed the remaining five wickets for 16 in 32 balls, starting withFoster who was caught behind for 14, a contribution spanning 32 deliveries.Graham Napier was undone leg before for his third successive duck and inbetween bowling David Masters and Tymal Mills; he ended the aggressive inningsof Ten Doeschate. The Essex all-rounder had smashed three sixes among his 10 boundaries before being trapped lbw for 56. Those runs arrived in 51 balls whilst Meaker finishedwith figures of five for 66 from 16.4 overs.Linley returned figures of 4 for 48 and taking his season’s Championshiptally to 66. Surrey, however, were soon in trouble when they set out to build upon theirlead. David Masters struck to have Davies caught in the covers without scoring andtwo more wickets fell before the 50 was raised.Rory Hamilton-Brown chopped on against Napier with the total on 35 and nineruns later, Masters had Mark Ramprakash popping-up a simple catch to Godleman atshort leg. However, Tom Maynard and Zander de Bruyn put together an entertaining stand of60 in only seven overs before Maynard was trapped by leg before by Masters inthe final over of the day.

Gidman ton gives Gloucestershire control

Gloucestershire captain Alex Gidman scored his first century for nearly two years to lead his side into a commanding position against Leicestershire in their County Championship Division Two match at Grace Road

ESPNcricinfo staff19-May-2011
Scorecard
Gloucestershire captain Alex Gidman scored his first century for nearly two years to lead his side into a commanding position against Leicestershire in their County Championship Division Two match at Grace Road.Gidman scored a magnificent 168, his first ton since September 2009, as the visitors totalled 504 for nine before declaring, with New Zealander Kane Williamson scoring 149. Off-spinner Jigar Naik was Leicestershire’s most successful bowler, claiming 4 for 91 off 27 overs, while Matthew Hoggard finished with 3 for 80.That left Leicestershire to face eight overs before stumps, and they reached 15 without loss to trail by 489 runs with two days remaining. But the day belonged to Gloucestershire after they resumed on 177 for three, with Williamson on 102 and Gidman unbeaten on 32. Gidman made his intentions clear with a fine six over long-on off left-arm spinner Claude Henderson which brought up his half-century off 83 balls.Williamson was far more circumspect as he progressed to 149, before he was superbly caught low at slip by Will Jefferson off the bowling of Hoggard to end a 196-run fourth-wicket stand, the young New Zealand Test star faced 264 balls, striking 23 boundaries. But Gidman continued to bat impressively with some excellent shots through the leg side and reached a well deserved century off 167 balls, with 11 boundaries in addition to his six. Will Gidman, who has been in better form than his elder brother this season, contributed 16 to a fifth-wicket partnership of 68 before being trapped lbw on the back foot by the ever-improving Naik. The next landmark for Gloucestershire was his sibling’s 150, which was soon followed by the 400 total being posted, giving the visitors their fifth batting bonus point with one ball to spare. Some lusty blows from Ed Young kept the scoreboard moving, but Gidman was out shortly after tea, falling lbw to Henderson after a fine 244-ball innings. After that, it was a case of how quickly Gloucestershire could score to give themselves a chance of bowling Leicestershire out twice and they moved past the 500 mark despite late wickets falling, with Naik claiming three of them.Jefferson and Matt Boyce safely negotiated the last few overs of the evening, with Boyce picking up three boundaries as the home side reached 15 without loss at the close.

Australia aim for 4-0 whitewash

The Adelaide Test is a dead rubber but there are plenty of sub-plots to keep an eye on as Australia aim for a 4-0 whitewash

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale23-Jan-2012Match factsJanuary 24-28, Adelaide Oval
Start time 1030 (0000 GMT)Virat Kohli has shown there is batting talent in India beyond the established seniors•AFPBig PictureFour weeks ago, the first Test started in Melbourne on Boxing Day amid great expectations of a closely-fought tour and India’s best chance of pulling off a series win in Australia. Now after three Tests, none of which have lasted five days, the best India can hope for is a consolation victory in Adelaide. They will do so without their captain MS Dhoni, who was suspended after India’s loss in Perth due to slow over rates, and under the guidance of the stand-in skipper Virender Sehwag. At least Adelaide Oval is a venue that will give the Indians hope: in their past two Tests there, they have managed a win and a draw.As is so often the case in dead rubbers these days, there are plenty of sub-plots to keep things interesting. There is the question of whether leadership will bring out the best in Sehwag, who has had a disappointing tour with only one half-century. There is debate around the future of VVS Laxman, the most vulnerable of the seniors in India’s middle order. And there’s the ongoing hundredth hundred saga. For Australia, Michael Hussey has announced his intentions to play on for the next Test tour, but the last Test of the home summer is traditionally a time for farewells, so for Australia there is the chance, albeit slim, that Ricky Ponting or Brad Haddin might call it quits after the game. There is the matter of whether Shaun Marsh or Ed Cowan can score a big hundred to secure their place whenever Shane Watson returns. There are enough reasons to watch this Test over the next five days. Now let’s just hope the match lasts that long.Form guide (most recent first)

Players to watch …Last time the Adelaide Oval hosted a Test match, Nathan Lyon’s main job was to cut the grass. Now his brief is to bowl offbreaks to some of the world’s best handlers of spin. It has been a remarkable rise for Lyon, who joined the groundstaff in Adelaide last summer before being plucked out of net sessions by the state coach Darren Berry to play in the South Australia side. The rest is history. Expect plenty of support for Lyon in his first Test at his adopted home venue.Virat Kohli has shown that there is batting talent in India beyond the seemingly untouchable seniors. He is yet to make that big hundred that will really launch his Test career but his 44 and 75 at the WACA were impressive contributions as wickets tumbled through India’s two innings. He should enjoy batting at the Adelaide Oval, where he can make himself a permanent member of the Test side with a maiden century.Team newsThe offspinner Lyon will return, and the only question for Australia was which of the fast men would make way. The answer came on the day before the match: the left-armer Mitchell Starc was squeezed out and was named 12th man. Starc was impressive in Perth but still falls below Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus and Ryan Harris in the pecking order.Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Ed Cowan, 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 Ricky Ponting, 5 Michael Clarke (capt), 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Peter Siddle, 9 Ryan Harris, 10 Ben Hilfenhaus, 11 Nathan Lyon.Dhoni’s suspension will mean the inclusion of the backup wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, while R Ashwin should return after the ill-fated experiment of using Vinay Kumar as a fourth seamer at the WACA. A progressive selection panel would consider giving Rohit Sharma a chance at the expense of the out-of-form Laxman, but India’s selectors are expected to stick with the proven Laxman.India (possible) 1 Virender Sehwag (capt), 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 VVS Laxman, 6 Virat Kohli, 7 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 8 R Ashwin, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Umesh Yadav.Pitch and conditionsThe Adelaide Oval pitch is usually viewed as a batsman’s paradise, but often there is something in it for the fast bowlers early on the first day. “It will always produce spin later on as the game goes,” the curator Damien Hough said. “Normally there will be a little bit of inconsistent bounce on days four and five, so I wouldn’t expect anything else.”The forecast for the match is hot and sunny for all five days, with temperatures expected to hit 37C on the first day.Stats and trivia Virender Sehwag has captained India in three previous Tests, for two victories and a draw Ricky Ponting needs 81 runs to reach 13,000 in Test cricket Should Australia win, it will be their first series whitewash against India since 1999-2000 Australia have won just one of the past four Adelaide TestsQuotes”Anything less than a 4-0 defeat of this powerful Indian team will be a disappointment to all of us.”
