Why the summer transfer window will close for six days and re-open again

Premier League clubs have recently voted to open the summer transfer window early later this year – and it’s all because of Manchester City and Chelsea.

Due to the expanded FIFA Club World Cup, which features the winners of the 2023 and 2021 Champions Leagues, the game’s world governing body had given leagues involved the option to open their summer transfer window for 10 days.

This will allow clubs participating in the tournament to do some business before the tournament starts on 14th June.

FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Qualified teams, format, venues & how to watch

The FIFA Club World Cup takes place this summer, with plenty of teams set to head to the United States in July 2025.

ByRoss Kilvington Oct 30, 2024 Why the transfer window will close for six days in the summer

At a meeting in central London, Premier League clubs have voted for an early start to the window on Sunday 1st June, before closing again on Tuesday 10th June.

It will then reopen on Monday 16th June ahead of the summer transfer deadline on Monday 1st September. But why does the window have to close?

FIFA transfer windows can only be open for a maximum of 89 days, meaning the window must close briefly so that the deadline can remain in line with the rest of Europe.

If the Premier League’s window was to close earlier, it could leave clubs at a disadvantage as they would be able to sell players without the prospect of replacing them.

Manchester City and Chelsea are taking part in the first 32-team FIFA Club World Cup, which takes place in the United States between 14th June and 13th July.

UEFA has 12 slots available, and are made up of the last four Champions League winners, as well as the best-ranked teams over the last four years as per UEFA’s team ranking.

South America’s CONMEBOL has six teams, while all the other confederations have four teams each, except for Oceania’s OFC, who are represented by New Zealand’s Auckland City. Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami were invited as ‘hosts’.

The format is similar to a World Cup, with the top two in each group advancing to the knockout stages.

Australia embark on quest for defining victories

The squad comes together in the UK this weekend ahead of next month’s WTC final then the five-match Ashes

An Australian squad arriving for an Ashes tour of the UK is not like it used to be. Long gone are the days of landing en masse at Heathrow airport in late April to begin a month of county matches before the real thing started. Even a single warm-up game is no longer a reality. This generation of players will convene over the next few days from a variety of locations with little more than a week to prepare for their first challenge of the trip which has nothing to do with Ben Stokes and Bazball as they look to secure the World Test Championship against India. Those who have remained in Australia will meet those who have been playing county cricket and IPL – minus Cameron Green, for now, who remains with Mumbai Indians – for a few days of team bonding (which may include golf) before a short training camp in Beckenham. Australia’s choice of how to prepare for these six Tests has been a topic of considerable debate, particularly in light of how they used a similar approach ahead of the India tour and were off the pace in the first Test, although it’s worth noting how they did not have warm-up matches in Pakistan or Sri Lanka, either.Related

Taylor sees potential for Warner to follow 1997 revival

Hazlewood included in Australia's WTC final squad amid fitness race

Kohli: 'We've got Test cricket after the IPL, so I've got to stay true to my technique'

Why Australia could have the advantage in the World Test Championship final

There is a view, and not only shared by Australia, that the value of the tour match has diminished so much as to make them redundant. Head coach Andrew McDonald believes self-contained intrasquad training, in a controlled environment, can be more beneficial. In their favour this time is that conditions in the UK will be less extreme than those that presented in India (notwithstanding the challenge the Dukes ball can provide) and for which a few days at North Sydney Oval was not like-for-like.Some of the squad have been getting good-quality middle time against the red ball, notably Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith whose volume of runs in the five Tests against England will likely determine the course of the series. Then there is Michael Neser, not officially part of the squad, although that could change, whose standing has only risen over the last few weeks.Australia’s first challenge is to overcome Rohit Sharma’s India•Getty Images

Those coming from the IPL have a few more question marks, although it’s a transition players are used to these days. However, Virat Kohli’s recent comment about having an eye on his Test technique even during the IPL was notable. Much of the focus will be on David Warner and whether he can find a likely final flourish to his Test career. It is difficult to read much into T20 form with what is ahead and, while McDonald was sounding a more upbeat note this week, there will be a better indication when he faces the new ball at The Oval.It appears time may be too tight for Josh Hazlewood to make the WTC final after his small setback in the IPL. It had been said that the short spells of T20 cricket provided the ideal lead-in for Hazlewood. Again, judgement on that will have to wait. Being ready for Edgbaston now looks like the goal as he tries to emerge from a stop-start two years in Test cricket. The fact the India Test comes first and so close to the beginning of the England series makes this a curious build-up to the Ashes. In a sense it almost goes on pause while the business of deciding the Test champion is confirmed, but in reality one will spill into the other especially when it comes to form and any potential injuries.Steven Smith is among those who have been playing in England•Getty Images

Overall, it feels as though Australia are in decent shape. It’s a healthy sign when you can probably ink in 10 names of their XI for The Oval. Usman Khawaja and Travis Head, two crucial cogs at the top and in the middle, will need to get into gear swiftly after a short off-season, while Green, fresh off a thunderous maiden T20 century for Mumbai Indians, faces the adjustment from to Tests that challenged him in the last Australian season. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon have been building up their workloads at home. Despite the questions around Hazlewood, they do not have the lengthy injury concerns of England’s pace attack while India have also had to deal with some problems ahead of the final.”Feels as though it’s coming together well,” McDonald said earlier this week. “If you’d asked me a month ago it feels disjointed, got people everywhere, but having that week [in Brisbane] when we connected with the players back in Australia, those guys are almost fully wound up and ready to go and that was by design. We have a shorter prep on the ground when we get over there.”This year – with the trio of top-level Test assignments laid out in front of them – was billed as era-defining. “We’ve spoken about being on a continual journey,” McDonald said. “It will be up to others to define the team.”The opportunity in India had gone almost before they realised but they were strong enough to not fall apart. The next two months will go a long way to determining how this group, under Pat Cummins’ leadership, will be remembered. If they can emerge as World Test Champions and win an Ashes in England for the first time since 2001 it would give the team a legacy. As Meatloaf sang, two out of three ain’t bad.

Fabrizio Romano shares update on Arsenal move to sign £60m Bruno Guimaraes

Arsenal have their sights on some money-spinning summer deals this summer and Fabrizio Romano has now delivered an update on Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

Mikel Arteta looks to take Arsenal squad to the next level

Very few Premier League fans would argue against the notion that Mikel Arteta has a strong squad to pick from at the Emirates Stadium, but injury issues have put paid to their title challenge.

Mainly, the forward line has been the area prone to the most disruption. Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus have been notable casualties, though Ricardo Calafiori and Takehiro Tomiyasu have also spent time away from the backline.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetacelebrates after the match

Either way, Arteta faces a decisive summer if Arsenal are to pull themselves into direct contention for domestic silverware in 2025/26. Reports earlier this week claim the Gunners are in pole position to sign Nico Williams from Athletic Club.

His mooted £10.4 million annual wages aren’t said to be a problem, though it remains to be seen if the Spain international fancies a move to North London over other potential destinations such as Chelsea and Barcelona.

Following the same trail as many of their competitors, Arsenal are also in the hunt to sign Jonathan David from Lille on a free transfer and active talks are underway between the club and his representatives.

Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United have put their own case forward to the Canada international, making for an intriguing spectacle as his contract in France nears expiration.

Rumours are rapidly circulating surrounding potential reinforcements at Arsenal and Fabrizio Romano has now taken the liberty of addressing speculation surrounding one of the Premier League’s most established midfield operators.

Fabrizio Romano addresses Bruno Guimaraes' links with Arsenal

Speaking on his YouTube channel, renowned transfer guru Romano, as per Caught Offside, shared an update on Newcastle star Guimaraes and a move to Arsenal.

There were reports that Newcastle received a £58m bid from Arsenal for Guimaraes, whereas there have been claims that if Newcastle don’t qualify for the Champions League, they could sell the midfielder for £60m.

However, as per Romano, there has been no ‘direct contact’ between any party relating to the Brazil international swapping Tyneside for London this summer.

He explained: “We are having many reports on Bruno Guimaraes, reports about Arsenal and other clubs interested in Bruno Guimaraes. What I am able to tell you today is that despite all of the stories involving Arsenal, I’m not aware of any concrete negotiation or concrete contact between Arsenal or Bruno Guimaraes.”

Later, he added: “He was on the list when the director was Edu Gaspar, they’re Brazilians, so the connection is there. Now the new director is Andrea Berta, and at the moment I’m not aware of any direct contact for Bruno Guimaraes and Arsenal.”

This campaign, the former Lyon man has excelled when breaking the lines, registering three goals and eight assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.

Walking away from the season with an EFL Cup winners’ medal, now may be the perfect time to seek a new challenge. However, any notion of a possible move to Arsenal may be slightly more complicated than first anticipated, giving Berta work to do upon his arrival.

Jonny Bairstow: 'People say you're limping, yeah, well I am'

Ten months on from career-threatening injury, bristling innings answers critics in emphatic style

Andrew Miller21-Jul-2023

For some cricketers, the agony of missing out on an Ashes century would be hard to endure. For Jonny Bairstow, however, the raw emotion that went into his stunning innings of 99 not out from 81 balls on the third afternoon at Old Trafford meant that his final numbers mattered not a jot. For Bairstow has fought back from genuine, career-threatening agony in the past year, and at the close of play he let it all pour out in a heartfelt pitch-side interview.”You just don’t know how bad it’s going to be. It could have ended my career,” Bairstow told Sky Sports’ Ian Ward, as he recalled the horrific slip on a golf course last September that brought an abrupt end to the most extraordinary season of his career, and left him instead with a leg that was broken in three places, plus a dislocated ankle and associated ligament damage.A less bloodyminded cricketer than Bairstow might not have even contemplated such a hard-fought comeback, let alone succeed in returning to action in time to take part in one of the most hotly anticipated Ashes series of recent memory. The fact that he did so as wicketkeeper, after the stunning impact of his batting replacement Harry Brook, was an extra burden. At times in the series, it has visibly weighed him down, with a succession of missed chances behind the stumps leading to speculation about his place for this Test. But, after plucking an outstanding one-handed chance off Mitchell Marsh in Australia’s first innings, he rode that confidence into a formidable display of power-hitting at the back-end of England’s reply, with his ten fours and four sixes helping to extend their lead to a daunting 275.”I’ve got nine pins, and a wire that goes through my ankle, and I’ve had nine months out,” he said. “I’m still only 10 months post-operation right now. So when you speak to the surgeon and he says ‘I’m surprised you’re walking and running, never mind playing professional sport’, I’m delighted to be where I’m at.”There’s times when there’s aches and pains and people are saying you’re limping, well, yeah, I am at times, because there’s a lot going on in the ankle, and other bits that people won’t understand. It’s been a rollercoaster. There’s been a lot that’s happened in those nine months. And to come out and take the field again, with a group of boys that I care a heck of a lot about, is a special place for me to be.”Asked about his struggles behind the stumps, Bairstow acknowledged that his lack of playing time had been a massive factor.”There’s been a couple I’ve put down. I’ve not kept wicket for three years,” he said. “I played a couple of games for Yorkshire, then straight into an Ashes series. I didn’t bat against Ireland because the boys played unbelievably well. I’m delighted as to where I am. From a physical point of view, it’s taken a heck of a lot of graft.”But you know what I’m like, you know my personality. It’s not for a lack of trying. I’m very, very proud of every time that I walk out and put on an England shirt, whether it be in a Test match or an ODI or a T20. I’m a proud, proud guy and it means a lot to me, and to get back and be available for selection for the Ashes is something that makes me immensely proud.”I couldn’t have done it without my friends and family, and all the support that they’ve given me throughout the winter. I’m just pleased to be playing. That’s exactly what it’s about. The people that have got your back, the people that are there through thick and thin.”That dressing room is so solid,” he said, gesturing at the England balcony. “We’ve got a special group of players in there, and a group of players that’ll fight tooth and nail for each other, and we’ve seen over the last 12-18 months, the direction that we want to go as a group.”I don’t think that’s changed throughout the series. Our approach has been questioned at times by you guys, but we’ve stuck to our guns all the way through. That’s exactly how we played our cricket ever since Ben [Stokes] came in charge of the side, and that’s what we’re sticking by. We’ve not taken a backward step, no matter who we’ve come up against. Whether that’s right or wrong, we’ll continue to do that because, there’s a bigger picture that’s been spoken about, with the game of Test cricket.”On his tactics on the day, Bairstow acknowledged that his own experience of being a wicketkeeper had helped him to judge which deliveries he could safely steal a bye and get his partner James Anderson off strike, and added of his own hitting options with Australia’s fielders set back on the rope: “When you’re downwind, you’ve got to go up.”With the squares as they are the moment, you’ve got to try and hit it as hard as you can across the square and let the rest happen. We’re fortunate to play on good pitches and the outfield has been quick, so it’s just a case of trying to pick the biggest gap and trying to hit it as hard as you can.”Related

Speaking afterwards on Sky Sports, Nasser Hussain remarked that Bairstow had been “ticking” throughout his innings, and credited Stokes for reading the situation perfectly after lunch. Instead of declaring with England nine-down and Bairstow unbeaten on 49 from 50 balls, he trusted his team-mate to keep attacking a tiring Australian attack and building England’s lead with the sort of statement innings that he tends to produce when he’s got a point to prove.”Everyone thinks that I play better when people go at me, it gets a bit tiresome to be honest with you,” Bairstow insisted. “I’ve played a lot of cricket now and to be keep being told that you’re rubbish. Well, if I was that was that rubbish. I wouldn’t have played 94 games …”I’ve been happy [with my form],” he added, obliquely referencing the controversy at Lord’s where his stumping on the final day of the match opened the door for Australia’s second victory. “There’s been a couple of interesting dismissals during the series … but it’s only a couple games ago that I got 70-odd, so it is what it is.”That’s part and parcel of the way that I want to play my cricket. I want to go out and enjoy it. I want to go out and entertain. People will have comments on the way that I bat, they always have done. That’ll carry on, but you can leave them to their comments, and I’ll just keep on doing what I’ll do in the middle.”On the Lord’s controversy, Bairstow stated: “I don’t have a view”. However, he acknowledged he had been extra mindful of staying in his crease throughout his innings at Old Trafford. “I’ve done that all series since that happened,” he added. “You’ve just got to be careful on those things, haven’t you.”It wasn’t the way that I wanted to be out down at Lord’s, but that’s part and parcel. We’ve seen it on other occasions, and I’ve even heard about it now in club cricket. That’s not necessarily what you want to be hearing about, when you’re looking at young kids coming up. You play it tough, you play it fair, and on a different day, it doesn’t happen but it is what it is.”
