He's worse than Antony: £73m Man Utd ace has agreed personal terms to leave

Manchester United continued their pre-season preparations for the 2025/26 campaign with a 2-1 win over Premier League rivals West Ham United in America on Saturday night.

Bruno Fernandes scored both of the team’s goals in a narrow win over the Hammers, scoring from the spot in the first half before delivering a fantastic finish in the second.

There was another outing for new signing Matheus Cunha, who played the opening 66 minutes of the game, but Bryan Mbeumo was not ready to don the shirt for the first time.

Whilst fans have had the chance to watch last season’s team, along with Cunha, ramp up their preparations to improve on last year’s dismal showing, there are a number of players who have not been part of the travelling party.

Wolverhampton Wanderers'MatheusCunha

Ruben Amorim decided to leave several players at home for this tour and the Premier League summer series, as the club are looking to move on from them this summer.

One of the players in the ‘bomb squad’ is Brazilian forward Antony, who spent the second half of last season on loan with Real Betis in Spain.

Why Man Utd should sell Antony

It simply has not worked out for the left-footed dud in England and it appears to be the right time to allow him to move on from Old Trafford on a permanent basis, after a successful loan spell.

United reportedly agreed an £85m deal with Ajax to sign Antony in the summer of 2022 to bolster Erik ten Hag’s options at the top end of the pitch, but he has only mustered up 12 goals and five assists in 96 appearances for the club to date.

The 25-year-old star has not offered enough in the final third to suggest that he has much of a future in English football, rarely scoring or creating goals in his three years in Manchester so far, which is why it could be the right move to cash in on him this summer.

It could also be a smart time to cash in on the winger because he is fresh off the back of a successful loan spell with Real Betis, which shows that he does have the quality to make an impact in other leagues in Europe.

As you can see in the table above, the former Ajax star caught the eye with nine goals and 13 ‘big chances’ created in 26 appearances for the Spanish side, which may help United to attract interest from other clubs this summer.

Whilst it remains to be seen where Antony will end up by the conclusion of the summer transfer window, there is an even bigger United flop closing in on a move away.

Man Utd flop agrees personal terms on exit

According to the print edition of Corriere dello Sport (26/07/2025), as relayed by Tutto Mercato Web, Jadon Sancho has agreed personal terms with Italian giants Juventus.

The report claims that the England international, who is not part of the club’s pre-season tour, has verbally agreed to a five-year contract with the Old Lady, which would see him earn around £5.2m-per-season.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It states that Sancho is aware that his race is run at Manchester United and he is willing to drop his wage demands from the £8.7m-per-season he is said to earn at Old Trafford in order to seal a move to Italy.

However, the sticking point is currently the transfer fee. United want a fee of around £22m for the former Borussia Dortmund star, whilst Juventus are currently offering up to £17m.

Chelsea's JadonSanchocelebrates scoring their first goal

This is a move that appears to be heading in the right direction, though, given that he has already agreed personal terms, which means that flop could be closing in on an exit from Old Trafford.

Why Sancho is even worse than Antony

Cashing in on Sancho would be a great move for United because he has flopped in Manchester and is currently even worse than Antony as a wide option.

The English forward joined from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of £73m in the summer of 2021 and has scored 12 goals in all competitions for the Red Devils in the subsequent four years, which is as many as Antony has scored for the club in three years.

Sancho was not a part of Ten Hag’s plans at the start of last season and the Dutchman sent him out on loan to Chelsea for the 2025/26 campaign, but he struggled to offer consistent quality for the Blues.

As you can see in the table above, Sancho only averaged a goal or an assist every 3.23 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea last term, as Antony outperformed him during his five-month spell with Real Betis.

These statistics show that the Brazilian winger was far more effective during his loan spell away from Old Trafford, as he scored more goals and created more ‘big chances’ in 16 fewer appearances.

As Jamie Redknapp said in the clip above, Sancho simply does not do enough in the final third to produce goals and assists to help his team win matches.

The 25-year-old flop has scored 12 goals in four years at United and only managed five goals in 42 games on loan at Chelsea, which backs up the pundit’s point about his lack of output at the top end of the pitch.

Another Cunha & Mbeumo: £100m "monster" now wants to join Man Utd

Manchester United could have the chance to bring in another ‘proven’ Premier League talent…

ByRobbie Walls Jul 26, 2025

Therefore, United should be delighted that Sancho has agreed personal terms with Juventus and is now closing in on an exit, with the finer details of the transfer fee just to be ironed out, because he is even worse than Antony, and possibly a bigger flop despite a smaller fee.

The next Henderson: Liverpool now closing in on a "monster" new signing

Liverpool are marching their way through the summer transfer window like nobody’s business, with the signings made thus far fitting additions to a Premier League-winning team.

It’s a good thing too, for the Anfield side’s domestic rivals are looking to reel in impactful additions of their own as they look to challenge for the top-flight title next term.

FSG will slow down now, though, having signed two full-backs and Florian Wirtz (for a British-record £116m fee) to boot.

And there’s more still to come. The Merseysiders have placed themselves in a strong financial position after biding their time across recent transfer windows and claiming a windfall from sealing the league title.

Where might FSG strike next?

Where Liverpool are planning to strengthen

There’s plenty of noise surrounding Liverpool’s planned signing of a centre-forward, but with Bayern Munich plotting to sign Luis Diaz, we may see a left-sided winger arrive at the club in the coming month too.

The usual rumours linking Liverpool to Anthony Gordon have resurfaced; might we see the Three Lions star playing alongside Alexander Isak, his Newcastle United teammate, at Anfield next season?

After such a fierce wave of activity, Liverpool can now afford to be opportunistic, though there is still a pressing need for a central defender as Jarell Quansah prepares to join Bayer Leverkusen for £35m and Ibrahima Konate’s contractual uncertainty rumbles on.

Liverpool had attempted to bring Dean Huijsen over from Bournemouth, but that one’s off the cards.

Huijsen might have signed for Real Madrid, but Liverpool have shown they still want to sign a centre-back, and there’s one man in particular in Richard Hughes’ sights.

Liverpool agree personal terms for Premier League star

As per journalist DaveOCKOP, Liverpool have reached an agreement on personal terms with Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Guehi is out of contract at the end of the 2025/26 season and Liverpool are planning to take advantage of the market opportunity, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, with talks been the clubs slated for this week.

Liverpool and Palace are apart on their valuations, so the coming days will prove crucial. The Reds hope to strike a deal for £30m.

Why Liverpool want natural leader Marc Guehi

With so much change taking place at Liverpool this summer, it would be good to sign an experienced Premier League star, and Guehi fits the bill in that regard.

Praised by England U21 coach Lee Carsley for showing “leadership qualities on and off the field”, Guehi may even find himself in contention for the armband down the line, having captained the Eagles in each of his 44 appearances across all competitions last season, leading his side to the FA Cup title after beating Manchester City in the final.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehireacts after the match

In this regard, the England international might even become Liverpool’s next Jordan Henderson, arriving for a fairly large fee from a Premier League rival after demonstrating authority and influence to marry with the technical quality.

Guehi, it must be said, is one of the most composed and cultured ball-playing centre-halves in the Premier League, actually ranked among the top 12% of positional peers across Europe over the past year for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref.

His completeness and potential to guide Liverpool through a new era over the coming years speak of a certain similarity to Henderson, especially as he would play alongside a legend in Virgil van Dijk for the next few years as the Dutch captain approaches his twilight. In Henderson’s case, this was applicable to Steven Gerrard.

Liverpool signed Henderson from Sunderland for £20m back in 2011. He had already been capped by England and was considered a hugely promising midfield talent.

Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson

No one could have imagined what he would achieve. Across 492 matches for Liverpool, Henderson notched 91 goal contributions and captained Liverpool toward the Premier League, Champions League and many more.

Now, a new leader in Guehi can follow suit. He might be a little older, but the defender can emulate his compatriot, having established himself in a settled Premier League outfit, standing out.

It’s clear that this is a man of consistency and incremental, steady improvements. Regarded as a “monster in defence” by Palace reporter Bobby Manzi, the stocky defender won’t just be an exciting addition, but an instrumental one.

Liverpool, having lost Trent Alexander-Arnold and with Andy Robertson potentially on the move too, must ensure that they don’t create too youthful an underbelly to Slot’s title-winning squad, and Guehi will thrive in bringing his wealth of leadership qualities to the fold.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehiin action

Liverpool might have two of the most talented central defenders in the game, but the Reds need to replace Quansah with a player capable of playing a bigger part, the England U21 star only handed four top-flight starts.

Guehi is clearly an upgrade across every facet, both from a technical standpoint and in regard to his maturity.

Moreover, he’s a natural-born leader, and coming from a divisional rival having carved success for himself, perhaps Slot will see his own version of Henderson welcomed to the ranks in the coming weeks or months.

Chelsea now in talks for "quick" player who Alisson called "one of the best"

Chelsea are showing absolutely zero sign of slowing down after their deal for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, with trusted transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano sharing more transfer news out of Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea set for busy transfer week ahead of Club World Cup

Having already sealed a £30 million deal for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, it is also believed that Chelsea would ideally like to get one or two more signings through the door in time for this month’s Club World Cup (Simon Phillips).

Chelsea have another six days to register players in time for the tournament, with a mini-transfer window now open until June 10. The window will reopen on June 16, right the way through till September 1, but BlueCo have every intention of using the small ‘pre-summer’ window to acquire some desired targets.

With Delap completing his medical in a £30 million switch from Ipswich, Chelsea are also in the market for a new centre-back, winger and potentially other positions as we head into a very busy summer for Enzo Maresca’s side (Simon Phillips).

Interestingly, there could also be some major reshuffling in Chelsea’s goalkeeping department.

It’s been reported that Chelsea could green-light exits for as many as three shot-stoppers. Mike Penders is expected to head out on loan, while it is believed that BlueCo are open to offers for all three of Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, and Djordje Petrovic (Simon Phillips).

“Chelsea have been compiling a list of potential new goalkeepers for some time, and it is highly likely that they still bring one in this summer,” wrote journalist Simon Phillips in a recent Substack update.

“Chelsea want to upgrade what they have but will also be looking at the stoppers they do have at the CWC. The issue is that the likes of Petrovic and Penders do not want to be backup choices, and I can’t see Sanchez being happy with that either to be honest at his age.”

Chelsea in talks for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan

According to Romano, Chelsea are now moving for a top goalkeeping target ahead of the CWC – AC Milan’s Mike Maignan.

AC Milan's MikeMaignanreacts

The 29-year-old France international’s contract expires next summer, meaning he could be sold for as little as £30 million, according to reports in Italy. Romano claims that this situation has alerted the Blues, with Chelsea now in talks with Milan over signing Maignan.

Maignan has been linked with Chelsea for a while, and it now appears they’re attempting to formalise their interest.

He would add both top-level experience and assured quality to Maresca’s backline, and you could argue that a swoop for the Serie A star is a real no-brainer considering how cheap Maignan could prove to be.

The Rossoneri star has also been lavished with praise by Alisson, who called him one of the world’s best keepers.

“He is physical, quick, he has clean technique. He is very strong. He is one of the best in the world,” said Alisson. “The quality of goalkeepers has really increased – Mike Maignan is within this elite.”

Another Sancho situation: Man Utd plot move for "world-class" £30m star

Manchester United will want to improve all areas of the pitch during the summer transfer window, needing to right the wrongs of the 2024/25 campaign, which was certainly one to forget.

The Red Devils lost in the Europa League final and also finished 15th in the Premier League, with no European football present at Old Trafford next season.

Such a failure will certainly have an impact on finances at the club, restricting any funds that boss Ruben Amorim may have had at his disposal had they claimed victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Ruben Amorim

However, it could be a blessing in disguise, handing the manager the opportunity to work closely with his players and mount a serious charge for the Premier League’s top four in 2025/26.

Regardless of the terrible form, the hierarchy look set to give Amorim the benefit of the doubt and hand him funds to change their fortunes, with numerous players already on the manager’s radar.

The latest on United’s hunt for new additions this summer

Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo and Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap have been on United’s radar in recent days, with the hierarchy holding talks with the Cameroon international over a switch to Old Trafford this summer.

The club have been quoted a fee in the region of £50m for the 25-year-old star, who’s managed to score 20 goals in the Premier League this season, but could face competition from Newcastle United for his signature.

Brentford's BryanMbeumoreacts

However, the other end of the pitch is also in need of investment, with Burnley shot-stopper James Trafford emerging as a summer target, according to GIVEMESPORT.

The report claims that the club are exploring potential reinforcements to bolster the ranks, with the future of Andre Onana at United uncertain given his recent showings.

It also states that it’s unknown how much Scott Parker’s side will demand for the signature of the 22-year-old, who kept a staggering 29 clean sheets in the Championship last season, but prior reports this year suggest it may be around £30m.

Why Trafford could be the next Sancho

Winger Jadon Sancho joined United in a £73m deal from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2021, but it’s safe to say his time at Old Trafford has been a disaster.

Jadon Sancho

The Englishman has made 83 appearances for the club, scoring just 12 goals and being sent on various loan spells – including back to the side which the Red Devils landed him from.

The 25-year-old is currently on loan at fellow Premier League side Chelsea, but could well be back in Amorim’s side ahead of next season if the Blues trigger his £5m cancellation fee after originally joining with an obligation to join permanently.

He’s only scored four times in his 40 appearances across all competitions in West London, with the club undoubtedly set to lose a small fortune on their investment in the near future.

However, the club could land a repeat of Sancho in a summer move for Trafford, with the goalkeeper following a similar path in his career to the winger over recent years.

James Trafford for Burnley.

The pair both came through Manchester City’s academy, before moving elsewhere to make their name and potentially costing the Red Devils a small fortune in the process.

Whilst it’s unclear how much a deal for the shot-stopper would set the hierarchy back this summer, it’s one they should look to avoid with better options available in the market.

Trafford, who’s been labelled “world-class” by current boss Parker, was unable to better current ‘keeper Onana in numerous key areas during his last stint in the Premier League, even dropping to number two in the pecking order as a result.

Whilst there’s no denying that a new goalkeeper needs to be on the agenda this summer, Amorim and the board should be exploring other options, with a more experienced head needed between the sticks.

Given the similarities between him and Sancho’s career path, it’s another reason as to why they should steer clear – needing to find value for money elsewhere given the financial constraints.

Shades of Hazard: Chelsea plotting move to sign £39m-rated "entertainer"

It has been an interesting season in 2024/25 for Chelsea. They face a fight on their hands to secure a spot in the top five, and are still competing in the UEFA Conference League, a competition many expect them to win.

In the top flight, the west London side are one of the biggest underperformers when it comes to expected goals, highlighting an issue in front of goal. As per Understat, they have an expected goals tally of 64.83xG, but have actually managed just 56 goals, an underperformance by 8.83. There are only four top-flight sides with a bigger underperformance.

Thus, it might not be a surprise that the Blues are targeting a new attacker this summer.

The forward Chelsea want to sign this summer

It has been a theme in the last few years that Chelsea have signed players, and even a manager, from Brighton and Hove Albion. Well, this summer might be no different, given they are linked with Seagulls attacker Georginio Rutter.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to a report from Florian Plettenberg, Enzo Maresca’s side are thought to be ‘closely monitoring the development’ of Rutter down on the South Coast, and could make a move for him this summer, having ‘added him to their shortlist’.

The situation between the versatile attacker and the West London outfit has been described as ‘one to watch’ by Plettenberg, ahead of what will be a busy summer at Stamford Bridge.

He did not clarify a price, but Football Transfers value him at upwards of £39m.

Why Rutter would be a good signing for Chelsea

It has been an impressive season so far for Rutter in his debut campaign for the Seagulls. This term, he has eight goals and five assists across all competitions for Fabian Hurzeler’s side, including five in the Premier League.

In fact, the 22-year-old Frenchman, who is capped at under-21 level for his country, might certainly help with the expected goals deficit at Stamford Bridge. He is generally a lot more consistent this term, with 5.68xG, a 0.68 difference from his actual tally, as per Understat.

Another reason Chelsea fans can get excited about signing Rutter is the flair he brings as part of his game. Described as an “entertainer” by football analyst Ben Mattinson, the former Leeds United star is a tricky customer for most defenders, and oozes confidence in one-vs-one scenarios.

Indeed, it is not just that video that showcases how exciting Rutter can be with the ball at his feet, but the numbers from FBref are also there to back it up.

For example, the Seagulls’ number 14 averages 1.47 successful take-ons per game, ranking him in the top 9% of forwards across Europe over the last year.

There are certainly shades of Chelsea legend Eden Hazard in Rutter. At his peak, the former Blues winger was described as the “best player in the league” by Jamie Carragher, who said he “does things that others can’t do”.

The legendary Belgian attacker was phenomenal in a Chelsea shirt. He scored 110 goals and grabbed 87 assists in 352 games for the west Londoners, becoming one of the most exciting players to watch in the Premier League.

That was thanks to his fearlessness on the ball, all the tricks at his disposal and the ability he had to glide past players. As per Sofascore per game, he averaged 5.8 successful dribbles in 2017/18, his highest on record.

If Rutter – registered 24 goals and assists for Leeds last season – is even half as good as Hazard was for Chelsea, they will have a world-beater on their hands. He certainly comes with lots of the flair their former number ten possessed, and has that ability to beat players in one-vs-one scenarios.

At just 22 years of age, there is plenty of time for Rutter to develop, too. He is a player who can score, create and carry in an effective manner, just like Hazard did. He could be a player Chelsea fans fall in love with.

Calm Sciver-Brunt shows why England can rely on her batting again

England are showing signs of depth, and if they can continue to build on it, it’s even better for them

Valkerie Baynes18-May-2024Maia Bouchier’s timing was right on as she tucked the first ball of the match through backward square for four then rocked back to cut Waheeda Akhtar effortlessly to the deep point boundary three balls later. She pierced the covers off a wider, fuller ball from Sadia Iqbal to bring up her third boundary and was cruising despite losing her opening partner, Danni Wyatt, cheaply. The dismissal had brought Alice Capsey to the crease and her five boundaries off Waheeda’s third over spelt trouble for Pakistan, even if the first was a streaky edge which evaded the keeper and the second a premeditated slap through square leg.Another assured strike over the covers from Bouchier had England 48 for 1 at the end of the powerplay, a vast improvement on their 29 for 4 in the opening match of this series.Related

England’s 65-run victory in the second T20I in Northampton for an unassailable 2-0 lead was far more clinical than at Edgbaston last Saturday, where the 53-run margin was somewhat flattering to the hosts after they had collapsed to 11 for 4. And, on the surface, there were multiple contributors. In Birmingham, it was Amy Jones, Heather Knight and latterly 41 from Dani Gibson who rescued England. At Wantage Road, Bouchier and Alice Capsey ensured panic was averted with their 49-run partnership at almost a run-a-ball.But while they were by no means sluggish with 30 off 26 and 31 off 33 respectively, Nat Sciver-Brunt made them look it in her return at No. 4 after recovering from her egg-freezing procedure which kept her out of the first match and which she hopes will enable her and wife Katherine to start a family when the time is right for them.Unavailable to bowl until she builds up her workloads with a view to possibly returning to her allrounder role during the ODI series which follows Sunday’s final T20I at Headingley, Sciver-Brunt showed just why England could come to rely on her batting again against tougher opposition.Bouchier was run out trying to push for a single she clearly didn’t expect Diana Baig to stop with a full-length dive at extra cover, firing the ball into the keeper with Bouchier too far gone. That was until she picked out Fatima Sana at cover next over off Sadia to end a promising comeback innings on 31.The rest of England’s innings was unremarkable as they reached 144 for 6, some 19 runs fewer than they managed to defend at Edgbaston, after Dar removed Jones in the last over to move to the top of the T20I wicket-takers’ list outright. For England’s bowlers, it was another strong team effort against a Pakistan batting line-up which lacks power and, so far this series, longevity.Lauren Bell made early inroads, Sarah Glenn – who took four at Edgbaston – took 2 for 10 from three overs, and Capsey 2 for 4 from two as she was awarded Player of the Match. But it was spin-bowling spearhead Sophie Ecclestone who led the way with 3 for 11 in 2.5 overs as Pakistan were bowled out for 79 with 25 balls to spare. In the process, she overtook Katherine Sciver-Brunt as England’s all-time leading wicket-taker in Women’s T20Is with 117.”I forget I’m 25,” Ecclestone, who celebrated her birthday earlier this month, said. “My body doesn’t feel 25 sometimes, but I think it’s obviously exciting and a massive thing for me is I keep enjoying it.”I’m not much of a stats person. As long as the team’s winning and we win a World Cup and the Ashes coming up, then I don’t really care what my stats are.”When I saw it on the screen I actually didn’t realise I’d taken that many wickets. Katherine was great. She was someone I looked up to when I was really young and got her autograph a couple of times and to have overtaken her is a bit surreal.”Ecclestone was also full of praise for the other Scvier-Brunt. “She’s just amazing and to have her calmness back in the squad means a lot to us. It’s great to have her back and long may that continue.”Sciver-Brunt’s ongoing presence looks sure to stand England in good stead but, if they can continue to build the depth they are showing signs of now, even better for them.

Welcome to the Upside Down world, Sri Lanka

Australia have dominated, and the home side has been in disarray. Shoes have switched feet, and tables are upturned

Andrew Fidel Fernando08-Jul-2022[Start of match report]Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith made important centuries in Galle, as Australia continued to torment visitors Sri Lanka, moving to 298 for 5 by stumps on day one.For Labuschagne, who had passed fifty only once in Pakistan, this return to home soil brought a particularly welcome century, as he used his know-how on spinning pitches to hit 104 off 156.He swept often, and frequently made trips down the pitch.Smith, perhaps even more impressive during his 109 not out, pounced on anything full from the Sri Lankan spinners, sending them repeatedly through cover, while also flicking beautifully through midwicket.Smith only occasionally employed the sweep – the most talked-about stroke of the series – preferring instead to trust his own strengths on a familiar track. The paucity of Sri Lanka’s spin stocks, meanwhile, was exposed. With left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama ruled out due to Covid, and with Lasith Embuldeniya having been dropped on account of his poor form, Sri Lanka were forced to field two debutants in their attack, who each took time to settle at the Test level.Given the illness ripping through the squad, and the drubbing they received in the first Test, this is increasingly beginning to seem a torrid away tour.

****

It’s a match report from a parallel universe, but the way this series has panned out, Australia have dominated, and Sri Lanka have been in disarray. Shoes have switched feet. Tables are upturned. If you’d watched Australia basically vomit their way through that 2016 series in Sri Lanka, this is basically the Upside Down. Some of the hardship is of Sri Lanka’s own making, and we will get to that. But some of it is just the kind of bad luck that hits touring teams that are already down. When it rains, it pours so hard, it floods the living room and ruins the furniture.Sri Lanka desperately needed the likes of Dhananjaya de Silva in the side, for example. Aside from having hit a match-winning hundred in Sri Lanka’s previous home series, he is an increasingly wily offspinner, and an excellent slip fielder, particularly to spin. Kamindu Mendis, his replacement, bowls with both arms, but is essentially a part-timer in both his finger-spin disciplines. He didn’t bowl an over on day one, which considering he has only 19 first-class wickets, is not particularly surprising. And yet the ease with which Australia have overturned the narrative from 2016 has also been staggering. “Bat big in the first innings, and let the spinners loose” has been Sri Lanka’s go-to Test strategy at home for decades. In this match, Australia are in the process of batting big, and have the best spinner in the series in their dressing room. Mitchell Swepson is being guided through a series by a senior spinner. Part-timer Travis Head wreaked havoc in the second innings of the first match. All these are the kinds of tropes and hijinx you expect from a home side thoroughly at ease in their environment.Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith put up a dominating stand•AFPSri Lanka, meanwhile, have seemed confused. Should we sweep? Should we not sweep? Head coach Chris Silverwood says one thing. Captain Dimuth Karunaratne another.Australia’s bowling was always shaping up to be excellent, but it is with the bat with which they have truly surprised, making a turning Galle pitch that terrified them last time, seem like a jacuzzi in which to settle and soak.Where it’s the visiting team that should by rights be scrambling for batting theories in conditions they do not fancy, Smith and Labuschagne charted their own confident courses through much of their 134-run stand. Smith favoured leaping forward to get to the pitch of the ball, hitting early boundaries to create single opportunities for himself. Labuschagne swept liberally, and maintained a much higher tempo through his century than Smith.Although much has been made of Labuschagne’s mimicry of Smith, these were substantially different innings – two batters, sticking to their own strengths, feeding off each other at times, but never treading on one another’s toes. Perhaps it is in his negotiating of spin that Labuschagne diverges most markedly from the batter on which he once modeled his game.Like home-side batters who possess the nimbleness to adapt to varying conditions even at the same venue, both Australia’s No. 3 and 4 recognised this was a much better batting surface than the dust carnival the last Test had been played on. Each of them was secure in defence.”Last week’s game, I think the forward defence was the shot we talked about as being the toughest on that wicket,” Labuschagne said at the end of the day. “You felt like every time you were defending, one was going to explode or beat your outside edge or take your outside edge.”That was the one shot you could play today and you could trust a little bit more. You were just able to build an innings more regularly. Last week you had to be proactive, especially at the start of your innings, to get yourself in the game, put some pressure on the bowlers to get those freebies.”While Australia’s batters play and talk as if they were made out of Galle clay, Sri Lanka are rifling through spinners, desperately seeking a match-winner. Only one of their leading spinners is out through Covid (Jayawickrama), but in this match, they are fielding a spin attack comprised of a bowler playing his eighth Test, and two debutants. For Maheesh Theekshana, this is his first Test ever, and his fourth first-class match, the three previous having come in 2018.Theirs is not a desperate match situation yet, but it is nevertheless a difficult road back into the game. Australia, who have resoundingly won each of the Test-match days in this series, are poised to pounce again.

Delhi Capitals owner Parth Jindal: 'If we don't make it to the playoffs I have failed as chairman'

The franchise, no-hopers until not so long ago, are now aiming for the top. Their owner talks about how things have changed

Interview by Nagraj Gollapudi19-Sep-20205:07

Ganguly played a huge role in Ashwin, Rahane trades – Delhi Capitals owner

At 30, Parth Jindal is one of the youngest franchise owners in the IPL. In 2018, Indian business conglomerate Jindal South West (JSW), of which he is a senior director, bought a 50% stake in the Delhi franchise, paying Rs 550 crore (about US$85 million) to hold joint ownership with the GMR Group. The deal involves JSW and GMR swapping roles to lead the team management every two years. The 2020 IPL is the last of JSW’s first cycle as lead managers. Jindal tells ESPNcricinfo why he is confident the Capitals are capable of making the playoffs for the second straight year, having finished third in the 2019 IPL.Tell us about your IPL journey so far.
It has been incredible. I took over as chairman after the 2018 season, and that’s when we rebranded Delhi Daredevils to Delhi Capitals, brought in Sourav Ganguly as mentor. Ricky Ponting continued as head coach, we brought in Mohammad Kaif [as assistant coach], got in Dhiraj Malhotra as the new CEO. Then we changed the team colours and went in with a very clear auction strategy on what we need and don’t need.Last year was just an amazing year. It was so incredible to see the Kotla packed to the rafters and all supporting Delhi. In 2018, when I was at the ground and Delhi Daredevils were playing CSK in Kotla, half of the stadium was supporting CSK – and Dhoni obviously. When [Virat] Kohli came, half the stadium or even more were supporting RCB.It was only in 2019, once Delhi started doing well, once the people of Delhi started really feeling that the franchise has real hope and real possibilities of doing well [that they started to support the Capitals]. I remember the turning point was the Super Over against KKR, when [Kagiso] Rabada got Andre Russell clean bowled, middle stump cartwheeling, and that’s when Delhi really came alive. It was just so nice to see the amount of blue. We started [the season] with a few people wearing blue. Midway through, more people started wearing blue, and by the end of the tournament, everyone was wearing blue.Parth Jindal: “Two years ago we were not even contenders. Now most are saying that Delhi Capitals is a favourite for the playoffs”•Vishal Bhatnagar/Getty ImagesBack in 2018, when you took charge, you said you were looking to refresh and reboot the franchise. How far have you achieved the targets you set yourself for the first cycle of ownership?
I’d like to give a lot of credit to the GMR Group and to Kiran [Grandhi, of GMR, co-owner] because a lot of the players that they entrusted or they took deep bets on, like Prithvi Shaw, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Sandeep Lamichhane – all these young players, they backed them before they became big names. They were backing them since 2015. And when we took over the Delhi Capitals’ management from GMR, the core of the team was very well set. It made my job a lot easier, knowing that we had such phenomenal talent. So it became more about balancing the squad and adding more experience, and we brought in the likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Ishant Sharma. Last year in the auction, one of our top picks was Axar Patel – he brings a lot of balance as well. From a team point of view and from a squad point of view, we have achieved our goal. For me, the biggest thing was when R Ashwin and Ajinkya Rahane wanted to come to Delhi Capitals. They put in a request to Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals and said very clearly to their owners that they wanted to play for Delhi Capitals. That’s a huge testament to our franchise. We have a fantastic team this year. We are, on paper, a really strong squad. Ricky’s gonna have to pull his hair out deciding the XI. That’s all that an owner and management team can do: give the head coach the best possible squad for him to choose from. Very, very excited.

“Ricky’s gonna have to pull his hair out deciding the XI. That’s all that an owner and management team can do: give the head coach the best possible squad for him to choose from”

Our aim is, both on the field and off the field we want to cement ourselves as one of the top three IPL franchises, behind MI and CSK. Slowly try and break into that top two as well – and that can only happen if we win an IPL or two. Without that, tough to dislodge those two great IPL franchises, but that’s our ambition. You spoke about Ashwin and Rahane putting in a request to come to DC. How did all that come about?
Sourav Ganguly had a huge role to play in both those trades. While the IPL was going on [last year] he and Ricky had a lot of discussions on what kind of players we need to further strengthen Delhi Capitals. Dada mentioned Rahane and Ashwin to Ricky and Ricky was very keen on both those players. All of us discussed it.Based on the slow nature of the wicket at the Kotla, based on the fact that the ball spins a lot, stays low, we felt Rahane could play a very vital role for the team. And, obviously, Ashwin with his experience and his variety will play a great role. Dada pitched the idea to both Ashwin and Rahane. Ashwin was the captain of Kings XI and Rahane was the captain of Rajasthan Royals but he had just been removed and Steve Smith had been reinstated. Both of them [Ashwin and Rahane] felt that if they join Delhi it would strengthen our squad to such a degree that it would give our squad a great chance of winning the IPL.

“We started 2019 with a few people in the stands wearing blue. Midway through, more people started wearing blue, and by the end of the tournament, everyone was wearing blue”

You own Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League. BFC have been very successful in the seven years of their existence. Will JSW be aiming for a similar success rate for the Delhi Capitals over the next five-year cycle?
Our experience with Bengaluru FC has really helped us in shaking things up at the Delhi franchise. At the core of our success at BFC have been two very simple facets: one has been treating players and support staff in the utmost professional way possible.JSW and GMR would love to emulate the success of Bengaluru FC and win the IPL as often as we can, but having said that, we are very cognisant of the immense competition in the IPL, the sheer professionalism in it, and I have deep admiration for the way some of the IPL franchises are run. So it’s a tall order, but we’ve set ourselves up as contenders. Two years ago we were not even contenders. Now every website and every pundit is saying that Delhi Capitals is a contender, and most are saying that Delhi Capitals is a favourite for the playoffs. That’s a big change, and we need to keep building on it.The players have to do the job on the field. We have to create the best atmosphere around them to make them successful. That’s all we can do. The rest is up to the players and the support staff, and we as owners have to support them to the hilt. Every player will have a bad run – it doesn’t mean you just drop them. You have to back them, you have to make them feel like they are part of your family, and only then will they perform. That’s been the beauty of the success of Bengaluru FC and Mumbai Indians, CSK and KKR. The way the players feel like they are part of the Mumbai Indians or the CSK or the KKR family is a feeling that we are working very hard to create at the Delhi Capitals.3:24

Will Delhi Capitals win the IPL this year?

That the Capitals are being talked about as playoff contenders even before the tournament starts – does that tell you that you’re achieving the target you’ve set yourself?
Absolutely. It is very gratifying. Last year we went in with no expectations and we came third. It was a really amazing season with a young captain. This year the expectations are very high. So the pressure is higher on me, higher on the coach, higher on the players. We have to respond to this pressure and we have to live up to our billing. You are only as good as how high you finish in the league stage of the IPL. That is the real barometer of success, according to me at least. Because in a semi-final or a playoff game, it is about how good you are on the day. But across 14 matches, that’s where consistency and depth of squad really comes across in a league format. So, yes, the pressure is higher, and the fact that people are talking about us as a playoff contender is gratifying feeling, but it will only have meaning if we actually achieve the results we’ve set out to do.What is it about Shreyas Iyer that makes you believe that he is a good leader?
Shreyas exudes confidence and calm. That is a phenomenal combination to have as a leader. He does not get bogged down by pressure, he thrives on it. I’ve seen him be extremely open to suggestions. Last year we had a lot of senior players in the team: Shikhi [Dhawan] was there, Ishant [Ishant Sharma] was there, Amit was there [Amit Mishra]. The way Shreyas took all of their feedback in while taking decisions was really great to see. He was also captaining international stalwarts like Rabada and Trent Boult.Ricky and Sourav were very impressed with him as a captain. Between last year and this year, Shreyas has had a lot of international cricket under his belt. He has cemented his place in the [Indian] limited-overs team. And that has given him an another degree of confidence. Now he’s knocking on the door of a Test call-up. He told me before they left for Dubai that his target for this season is to get a call-up to the Test squad. He’s an ambitious person by nature. Everyone really likes him. He’s very popular with the whole team, and he’s willing to learn and willing to hear everyone out.

“Every player will have a bad run – it doesn’t mean you just drop them. You have to back them, you have to make them feel like they are part of your family”

Do you reckon Rishabh Pant has the potential to become the biggest name in Indian cricket and the IPL in future?
That’s a very tough question. It is a lot of lot of pressure, and I don’t want to put any pressure on Rishabh Pant because he’s already under a tremendous amount of pressure, even though he doesn’t show it.The pressure for any Indian wicketkeeper after MS Dhoni is just enormous, and we saw that last year when India was playing and Pant missed a couple of stumpings and the whole crowd started chanting “Dhoni, Dhoni, Dhoni.” I felt it was really unfair for such a young boy to be criticised like that.Dada said he is one of the most talented and gifted cricketers that India has. He is also very hard-working and he needs a little bit of luck and he can be one of the biggest names in the IPL.He has all the potential to be one of the leading run scorers in the IPL. Last year itself he was, I think, No. 2 or No. 3 [Pant was No. 7]. The year before that he was the No. 2 run scorer. He has been performing in and out, and he’s the only Indian wicketkeeper to score a Test hundred in both Australia and England. So he has incredible potential and we are extremely lucky and fortunate to have him in our team. One name has come up a lot during this interview: Ganguly. There was a lot of talk before he became BCCI president about the conflict of interest in his role at the Capitals and the Cricket Association of Bengal at the time.
The day before he was being considered for the post of BCCI president, he [Ganguly] spoke to me and Kiran. He told us that he is in contention and he is not going to be a part of the Delhi Capitals as long as he is involved with the BCCI. I was crestfallen because his involvement was a huge factor last year for the team.”Shreyas exudes confidence and calm. That is a phenomenal combination to have as a leader”•Surjeet Yadav/Associated PressFrom that day onwards he has not spoken to me or anybody about the Delhi Capitals or about anything to do with the player strategy or auction strategy or match strategy. Other than just being a great friend of mine and a mentor to me, he has no involvement with the franchise. We really miss him at the franchise. This year is going to be the last year of your first cycle of ownership, before GMR become lead decision-maker. So how much pressure are you under to win the title?
Ricky and I had a long discussion about three weeks ago about the targets for this season. We have set ourselves the goal of making it to the playoffs. I personally feel that if Delhi Capitals does not make it to the playoffs, then I as an owner and the chairman of the franchise have failed.I’m very clear to everyone about that. I spoke to Kiran about that. I spoke to my father and to Kiran’s father about that, saying that this is the minimum expectation that everyone can have with Delhi Capitals – that we must make it to the playoffs. After that, I’m a firm believer that in a knockout match, you just need one player to make the difference. It’s anybody’s game. I don’t think setting a goal like winning the IPL is a fair goal or a fair ask on anyone, and I would never set that goal going into the season.Yes, the management switches over from JSW to the GMR Group post this season, but that doesn’t really alter our targets because we are one franchise. We are one unit: Kiran and I are like family. Our roles swap, but we’ve set a professional team below us to run the franchise. The goal remains to make it to the playoffs, cement ourselves as a top-three franchise in the IPL, and anything beyond that is obviously welcome and a bonus.Did Ponting agree it’s a realistic goal, making the playoffs?
Absolutely. He said, “Mate, I want to go one step further. I want to make it to the final.” Vivo suspended its sponsorship of the IPL recently and Dream 11 was roped at a discounted price. This week the Capitals announced deals with sponsors. How much of a challenge has it been from the commercial point of view?
If you look at the revenue streams for any IPL franchise, about two-thirds of the revenue comes from your digital and TV media rights. That value has remained unchanged. The balance one-third is split quite evenly for most franchises between sponsorship revenue, which is off jersey partners, and ticket sales.

“My personal belief this year is going to be the most watched IPL ever. The TRPs are going to be off the off the charts”

This year, with the IPL being held in the UAE behind closed doors, no franchise will be earning any ticket revenue. And sponsors are not going to be able to meet and greet players. Usually the brands get free tickets to the IPL games – even that’s not going to be available. So sponsors have been getting about a 15 to 20% discount on last year’s deal values. Overall there is about a 25% revenue drop as compared to a normal IPL year.On the other side, if the IPL didn’t happen, which was a real possibility, then there would be no revenue at all. I’m looking at it as half-full.Six months down the line, there’s going to be another IPL, next April. If things don’t improve in India, there’s every likelihood that the tournament could be played in the UAE again. What kinds of things can the BCCI do to ensure franchises don’t take another hit?
I don’t know if there’s anything the BCCI can do differently. This is a pandemic. Everyone is suffering. You know, global leagues around the world are also undergoing similar losses in revenue. If the IPL moves out of India again in April, to the UAE, we hope that in the UAE, Covid is under control and you can have fans in the stadiums. If that happens, then part of the revenue loss can be mitigated.Delhi Capitals v Kings XI Punjab live scores September 20My personal belief this year is going to be the most watched IPL ever. And the TRPs are going to be off the charts. On the back of the increase in viewership data, I’m sure next year the BCCI and all franchises, including Delhi Capitals, can extract more from sponsors and more from partners. Because it is directly proportional – the more eyeballs at the IPL, the more revenue the BCCI and the franchise owners earn through partnerships and sponsorship deals.

Ruben Amorim’s stance on Kobbie Mainoo raises questions about Man United’s academy pathway

First Ruben Amorim came for Marcus Rashford but Manchester United fans did not speak out because they had also questioned his commitment and performances. Then he came for Alejandro Garnacho and still they did not speak out as the winger’s attitude had become unbearable. But then he came for Kobbie Mainoo and there was total uproar, enough to finally push the patient supporters over the edge.

In Amorim's very first interview as Manchester United manager with the club's website, he said the most important thing was not to get his players to adapt to his new formation but to go back to the basics of what it meant to play for the Red Devils.

"The most important thing is the feeling of belonging of the club. And we have history in that department," Amorim said after his first week working at Carrington.

"I think it's important because a lot of people now talk about the 3-4-3 and the 4-3-3 and all that stuff. But when I think as a player or as a team-mate of Manchester United, it is not a system or formation, it's like the character of the players, the way they see the club. The most important thing for me at this moment is to create the principles, the identity and the character that we had in the past."

Ask any United fan what the club's identity is and two themes will come up: bold, attacking football and young players, particularly homegrown young players. Amorim has given little priority to either principle.

While United fans have been remarkably patient with the coach that presided over their worst campaign in 51 years, continuing to sing that the Portuguese will "turn the Reds around" at matches, his sparse use of Mainoo, who is the only academy graduate in the squad with a first-team appearance to his name, is severely testing their faith…

    Twelve minutes per game

United’s fans’ feelings towards Mainoo could be seen in the rapturous applause he got when he came off the bench against Wolves on Monday. But the timing of his arrival said all about his lack of importance in the team. It was the 78th minute and United were already 3-1 up against the worst team in the league, perhaps in Premier League history.

It was hard not to think back to when Mainoo appeared at Molineux for the first time little more than two years ago, playing the whole game and scoring a last-gasp winner with a jinking run and low curled finish right into the bottom corner. There was tangible excitement about Mainoo then after scoring his first Premier League goal against Wolves, which he followed with a stunning curler against Liverpool and then finished off an incredible team goal which proved to be the winner in the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

His rapid ascension into the England team to play six games at Euro 2024 seemed to cement his rise but his career is now at a crossroads as he is still waiting for his first Premier League start of the season. The most he has played was 45 minutes against Burnley in August when Mason Mount got injured. He is averaging 12 minutes per Premier League game.

  • No laughing matter

Amorim started Mainoo in eight of his first 13 Premier League games, mostly in the double midfield pivot alongside Manuel Ugarte. The most eye-brow-raising moment was when he started him as a false nine against Crystal Palace, a game United lost 2-0. He then suffered an injury in training which kept him out for two months and when he returned Casemiro had re-established his place in the midfield two, with Mainoo only starting when Amorim wanted to rest players for the Europa League knockout rounds.

Mainoo’s brilliant goal against Lyon kept United in the competition but he was not rewarded with a bigger role and in the final against Tottenham he was brought on in added time. But it was still a surprise to see him not start any of the team’s first three Premier League games and his continued absence from the line-up four months into the season has led to Amorim, understandably, being frequently asked why he has used Mainoo so little.

And when Mainoo’s name was mentioned in a press conference in the aftermath of the limp 1-1 draw at home to West Ham, Amorim let out a snigger, stunning journalists in the room and angering many fans watching online. To the coach, it would seem, Mainoo had become something of a joke.

"I understand what you are saying – you love Kobbie, he started for England," he said. "But that doesn't mean that I need to put Kobbie [in] when I feel that I shouldn't put Kobbie [in], so it's my decision. I just want to win, I don't look who it is, I don't care about that, I'm just trying to put the best players on the pitch."

    Academy culture war

Amorim, though, was missing a crucial point: it does matter that Mainoo is the only academy player left and he is barely part of the team any more. It led to heated conversation between the coach and BBC journalist Simon Stone, who suggested Amorim did not “trust” players from the academy. "Why?" was the coach’s tetchy response, only to be told "because you never pick any players from it". To sum up the dire situation, Amorim mentioned Mainoo as one academy player he does pick.

Mainoo’s lack of playing time has partly led to a large focus falling on Shea Lacey, the 18-year-old from Liverpool who has been named in the squad for the last four matches.

The mention of Lacey led to more incredulity from Amorim, who reasonably explained that Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo were more reliable options than the untested teenager. United fans are not really up in arms about Lacey’s lack of minutes. It is the absence of Mainoo, who started a European Championship final and scored in an FA Cup final, and who many believe could make his stop-start team better, that people find hard to understand.

And for all Amorim talks about wanting to win, his team are not doing it regularly enough.

In the coach’s defence, he has far fewer games in which to give opportunities to young players than last season, when Chido Obi, Toby Collyer, Tyler Fredricson and Harry Amass all got their chances. Mainoo, though, had already proven himself but is a victim of Amorim’s rigid system and his insistence on playing two midfielders. It means that he is directly competing with Bruno Fernandes, who just happens to be United’s most important player and someone who never gets injured.

'Got to get out of there'

Amorim has been unable to give any assurances that Mainoo will play more when Mbeumo and Amad head to the AFCON. And while an obvious solution is to play Fernandes further forward to replace Mbeumo in attacking midfield and bring Mainoo back in, it is more likely that Mason Mount will get a greater run in the team and the 20-year-old will stay in the shadows.

For Mainoo to get his career going again, seeking a loan move in January is obligatory. The fact that he does not want to leave permanently, or at least not yet, shows that he is still committed to the club and does not want to jump ship, especially with Amorim’s long-term future at the club far from secure. But now prominent former United players are urging him to leave.

"If I think about it and put myself in Kobbie Mainoo’s shoes I’m out of there, I’ve got to," said Rio Ferdinand on his Youtube channel. "He has just wasted 18 months of his career now at Manchester United. He’s probably been there six months longer than he should’ve been. He should’ve just gone and I think his agent and more importantly his family around him have to protect him."
