England Women turn to AI to aid borderline team selections

England Women are using artificial intelligence (AI) to inform selection using a system head coach Jon Lewis says proved crucial in last year’s drawn Ashes series.Lewis was first exposed to the technology, provided by London-based company PSi, while coaching UP Warriorz in the inaugural WPL last year. He has since spoken with the likes of England Rugby Union coach Steve Borthwick about the system, also used by English rugby league side Wigan Warriors and English Football League One side Wigan Athletic, which allows coaching staff to simulate various match-ups and scenarios.”We are able to run simulated teams versus the simulated opposition to give us an idea about how those teams may match up against each other,” Lewis said on Friday after revealing England’s white-ball squads to host Pakistan from next week.”I can send multiple different lineups to the company and they run, I think it’s about 250,000 simulations per team that I send with all the different permutations that could happen through the game.”What I would say is it’s not how we select the side, but it’s one part of selection that we use to help understand what could possibly happen in the future. We used it very successfully in the Ashes last summer with match-ups against the Australian side.”Related

Lewis said the research methods were impacted somewhat by a gap in the quality of historical data in the women’s game, a situation he believes will improve amid an increasingly packed international schedule and growing franchise scene. And while he said the tool was particularly useful in helping to make borderline selection calls, he would always opt for a people-first approach.”Obviously we’re on the ground with the people and that’s probably the first thing that we look to in terms of selection, which people are playing well, we use our cricketing eye,” he said. “But it’s one small part of what we do and it’s really interesting, and it played out really well last summer against Australia.”I think it will help with borderline decisions in terms of selections and match-ups. Will it ever be at the front, the thing that selects the team? I would say, in my view, no. Other coaches may feel very differently, but it is really interesting.”AI was used throughout last summer’s Ashes and Lewis pointed to the T20 leg, which England won 2-1 to get back into the series after losing the one-off Test, as a moment when it came to his aid in weighing up the merits of two players who were “both in really good form and were both really selectable”.”There was one selection in particular last year,” he said. “We saw a real strength in Australia and we matched up our strength, our best bowlers, to that part of the game against Australia last year. That worked really, really well for us. That helped us win the T20 series in particular and that got us back in the Ashes.”The players were both players that I was thinking about picking. So it did help me with those selections and it turned out that it worked out really well. So yeah, it can help selections, but my go-to would be get your people right first, get them all in the right head space, get their games in order, and then use data to support around selection.”England Women’s squads vs Pakistan•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

From data to people, England have just completed a bonding trip to the Lake District, which involved a number of team-building exercises including cold-water swimming, designed to see how players responded in situations that, for many, were outside their comfort zones.”We spend a lot of time in the nets and we spend a lot of time thinking and practising about how to improve those parts of our game,” Lewis said. “However, the game of cricket is a real tactical game. It’s a game of chess. You need to be able to be a really clear thinker under pressure and you need to be able to manage the anxieties that are around cricket, not only on the field, but the anxieties that all players face off the field as well.”We worked a lot on how to manage anxiety and how to manage pressure and to do that, sometimes you’ve got to take players out of the environment that they’re normally in. When you do that, you take away, I suppose, the hierarchy of the group a little bit and everyone becomes very even. Then what you start to see is different people voicing opinions, different people giving advice to each other, and I suppose the group connecting on a different level than they would do around cricket.”We did a really powerful session around facing our fears and the girls were really, really honest about what their fears were around being part of an England cricket team. There was some really interesting stuff that came out of that and that will really help us as a coaching group manage our players and help them to become more rounded people first and then better cricketers at the same time.”The players, some of them liked the activities that we were doing and some of them didn’t, and that caused different types of stresses and hopefully we help them with some ways to deal with those things.”

Hull three-for, Budinger onslaught see Leicestershire past Yorkshire

Foxes sprint to seven-wicket victory with almost six overs to spare

Leicestershire Foxes launched their Vitality Blast season in spectacular style with a thumping seven-wicket win over Yorkshire Vikings at the Uptonsteel County Ground in Leicester.Vikings had themselves started the season strongly with an eight-wicket win over Worcestershire Rapids the previous evening but were brought crashing back to earth in the East Midlands. They totalled a below-par 151 for 7, captain Shan Masood’s 45 off 32 balls standing out amid a bitty team effort which was heavily damaged by Josh Hull’s fiery 3 for 28.The moderate target soon appeared minuscule after Foxes openers Sol Budinger (50 off 22) and Rishi Patel (30 off 18) smashed six sixes and six fours in the first five overs. Their stand of 79 in 36 balls turned the chase into a cruise as Foxes galloped to 155 for 3 from 14.1 overs. After Foxes chose to bowl, Hull deployed his size 15s to excellent effect in a first over which cost just one run and brought the wicket of Dawid Malan, whose off stump was trimmed by a lovely ball. Ian Holland’s opening over also went for just a single in a sedate start by Vikings.Former Yorkshire allrounder Ben Mike struck first ball when he took a return catch from a spliced slog by Adam Lyth. That brought Joe Root to the crease for the 659th time in senior cricket and it isn’t a knock he will remember – three from nine balls before lifting Holland to long-on.Masood and Donovan Ferreira added 50 in 35 balls before Hull came back on to dismiss both in his first five balls. Ferreira gloved an attempted pull high to wicketkeeper Ben Cox and Masood top-edged a return catch. Both wickets owed something to the batters being surprised by pace in a highly impressive spell by the 6ft 7in left-armer.When Hull added a smart catch at short fine leg to dismiss Dom Bess off Scott Currie, Vikings were 116 for 7. Jordan Thompson smote Mike for successive sixes but Vikings’ bowlers were left with a tall task on a good batting pitch. They were hit by an immediate onslaught from Patel and Budinger who thrashed 50 from the first 22 balls. Patel lifted Dan Moriarty for successive sixes before the fourth over, from Thompson, went for 30 including three sixes for Budinger. Both openers perished in five balls went Patel skied Bess to long-on and Budinger sliced Jafer Chohan to backward point but they had left their side needing a comfy 67 from 80 balls. Louis Kimber and Wiaan Milder kept the momentum high with vibrant cameos and Foxes skipper Peter Handscomb was able to watch contently from the non-striker’s end as his side cruised home.

Hundred sell-off could be cricket's 'Premier League moment' – Leicestershire chief exec

Sean Jarvis warns of deepening divide between “haves and have-nots” at domestic level

Andrew Miller03-May-2024Sean Jarvis, Leicestershire’s chief executive, has warned that county cricket is facing its “Premier League moment” with the ECB’s impending sale of equity stakes in the Hundred, and has urged the game not to create the same divide between haves and have-nots that is currently afflicting English football.Despite being the reigning Metro Bank One-Day Cup champions, as well as top of Division Two in the County Championship after a rain-affected first month of competition, Leicestershire’s lowly status within English cricket was compounded last month when their bid for a Tier 1 team in the new women’s competition from 2025 was overlooked by the ECB – a decision that left the club “crestfallen”, according to a strongly worded statement.”We didn’t use that word lightly,” Jarvis told ESPNcricinfo. “We had every part of the business involved in our tender process, from the commercial team to the catering, because we genuinely believed it was an amazing opportunity for the ECB to tear up the rule book, and give a club like Leicestershire an opportunity to do something different.”Related

Instead, that decision means that Leicestershire are now one of seven first-class teams that will not be hosting international men’s cricket, Hundred matches or top-flight women’s domestic games from next year onwards, and Jarvis – whose 14 years of experience as commercial director at Huddersfield Town have informed his approach to cricket management – is concerned that the club is running out of opportunities to retain its relevance in a fast-changing game.”When do we get a leg up?” Jarvis said. “We want to be playing in the first division and reaching the quarter-finals of white-ball competitions, and that’s where we believe we’re headed. But if you compare us to, say, Nottinghamshire, who have a Hundred team, T20 Blast matches, and now women’s cricket, when you don’t get these things it does knock you back. That’s where I get frustrated with the ECB.”The gulf between the sport’s haves and have-nots could be set to grow in the coming weeks, however, as the ECB moves closer to a final decision on the future of the Hundred, after a protracted consultation period. The current expectation is that host venues will receive a 51% equity share of their respective teams, with the remaining counties sharing up to 30% of the competition’s remaining value.”This could be our Premier League moment, if we’re not careful,” Jarvis said, referencing the moment that football’s top flight broke away from the Football League in May 1992. “It’s the top six or seven clubs that call the tune. They are effectively protected all the time by the finances they generate, and it’s the others that are at the beck and call of the trap door.”I’ve been in that situation,” he added, having been involved in Huddersfield Town’s two seasons in the Premier League in 2017-19. “They got relegated to League One [third tier] this weekend, so if you’re one of the have-nots, getting into that party doesn’t guarantee you long-term success.Leicestershire are the reigning One-Day Cup holders•Getty Images”We’re at a very significant and exciting point in the future of the game,” Jarvis continued. “In terms of cricket in the UK, we’ve maybe reached the limit of domestic investment into the game. The Sky TV contract is what it is, as are the audiences that we’ve already got. But the game needs further investment, because the players are demanding higher salaries, and many grounds are crumbling.”If we get the Hundred decision right, it could catapult UK cricket internationally. That’s what happened with the Premier League, when it overtook the likes of Serie A and the Bundesliga. But we’ve got to be strong, and not simply allow the big boys to become bigger and even stronger.”There’s got to be a way that protects all clubs, and that includes the recreational game as well, because it will be detrimental to places like Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Kent and Northants in the long-term, if they’re not given that opportunity to come and sit at that table.”For that reason, Jarvis believes that the “Open Pyramid” option for the Hundred, whereby all 18 counties, plus MCC as the major stakeholders of London Spirit, compete in a two-tiered structure with the future prospect of promotion and relegation, should be not be discounted from the discussions.”The ECB must never, ever take away the opportunity for this club to win silverware in any competition,” Jarvis said. “We’re a classic example of the underdog winning something, and I’ve stressed that that must always be the case.”Whatever the upshot, Jarvis recognises that a major overhaul of Grace Road is overdue, and that Leicestershire’s share of the Hundred windfall – allied to strategic partnerships with Leicester City Council and other local business interests – should allow the club to produce a venue that can better serve the needs of one of the largest sporting communities in the country.”There’s an urban myth that the green area of Grace Road is the largest in the world, even larger than the MCG,” Jarvis said. “The good news is that we own our land, even if the infrastructure around it is very outdated. So with the cash injection from the Hundred, there’s a real opportunity to spend that money wisely, and give Leicestershire County Cricket Club a fighting chance going forward.”

Chelsea urged to beat Man Utd to Emiliano Martinez signing as Emmanuel Petit claims Aston Villa goalkeeper 'knows what it takes to win titles'

Former Chelsea and France star Emmanuel Petit has urged Chelsea to sign Manchester United target Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa this summer. The Red Devils have been linked with the World Cup-winning Argentine goalkeeper since the start of the transfer window and the club even saw their loan bid rejected by the Villans. However, Martinez could be allowed to leave for around £40 million.

Chelsea too were linked with a move for Martinez earlier in the summer after first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez faced criticism on quite a few occasions during the 2025-26 campaign. Now, former Blues star Petit has urged the west London side to chase the Argentine custodian.

  • WHAT PETIT SAID

Speaking to , Petit said: "Emiliano Martinez would be an inspiration in the Chelsea dressing room. I have criticised his behaviour in the past but he knows what it takes to win titles, he has that experience. He can inspire other players and he has all the qualities needed of a top goalkeeper. He would be a very good signing for Chelsea and 32 isn’t old for a goalkeeper. I think he’d link well with Enzo Maresca and the players already at the club. One fear I have is for Aston Villa, I am worried about them with top players leaving the club, I’m not sure where it will leave them next season."

Following the Villans' rejection of United's loan bid for their goalkeeper, reports have emerged that Martinez has also attracted strong interest from the Saudi Pro League, although the Argentina national team reportedly does not want him to move out of Europe just a year before their World Cup title defence in North America.

Leeds are on the lookout for a new number nine as Patrick Bamford is not part of manager Daniel Farke's plans, and Matteo Joseph is set for a loan exit. They have been targeting Fulham's Rodrigo Muniz but with the Cottagers reluctant to sell for now, reports suggest they both want Taremi – who scored three goals in 43 games for Inter last season.

DID YOU KNOW?

Taremi, who could reportedly leave for €10 million this summer, swapped FC Porto for Inter in 2024 but he has failed to fire at the Italian giants. This is in stark contrast to the Iranian's time at Porto, where he bagged 91 goals and added 56 assists in 182 games.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Frick, who coached Jashari at Luzern, heaped high praise on the midfielder but pointed out a flaw he feels the 23-year-old could work on. Jashari, who joined Club Brugge from Luzern last summer, is set to complete a €38 million (£33m/$43m) move to AC Milan after refusing to play for Brugge to force the transfer.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Jashari’s move to Milan marks the end of a tense period at Club Brugge, just a year after joining the Belgian side. Despite interest from Chelsea, Inter and Neom, the 23-year-old had his heart set on AC Milan. He was left out of club's Super Cup win over Union SG, with the team's captain saying he did not want to play for the Belgian side and he was left out for their opening league match.

Milan initially submitted a bid of €32m (£28m/$37m) plus €6 million in bonuses, but Brugge rejected the offer. Although reluctant to go overboard, Milan eventually returned with an improved offer that finally got the deal across the line.

  • WHAT MARIO FRICK SAID

Frick praised the midfielder’s maturity and labelled him as a born leader, saying: "From another planet: he'll have a great career, he's already on the pitch like a thirty-year-old. He's a natural-born leader: at twenty, he was already the head of the dressing room."

However, Frick also pointed out a flaw that Jashari still needs to work on, adding: "Whenever he can, he plays vertically, and I'm sure he would do the same in Italy. The only flaw is that he doesn't score many goals, but he has pace, he's quick, and he's physically strong."
